Plot Summary: The Galactic Patrol is in the middle of constant battle against the mysterious Boskone, which is led by the equally mysterious Helmuth. During one battle the spaceship Brittania is under attack by Boskone ships, and in a last-ditch effort Kimball "Kim" Kinnison tries to escape by heading toward the planet Arisia, which no one has seemingly been able to get back from unphased. However, Kim's bravery & skills get acknowledged by an Arisian named Mentor, who bestows upon Kim a Lens, a hand-mounted object that turns him into a Lensman, a powerful warrior who can help turn the tide in the battle against the Boskone.
