Tokyopop launches 2nd Manga Contest

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Second "Rising Stars of Manga" competition launches on June 1st

TOKYOPOP has announced that the second Rising STarts of Manga contest will run from June 1st to September 1st, 2003. Like the first competition, the competition calls for original manga style submissions from aspiring creators.

The ten winners of the first competition had their works published in an anthology that was recently shipped to bookstores. Similarly, ten winners of the second competition will have their works published in a new anthology that will be published next winter. They will also win monetary prizes (From $2500 to $500), and the grand-prize winner will be "invited to pitch a full-length manga story idea to TOKYOPOP executives for possible development as a graphic novel series."

TOKYPOP has defined "Manga" ontheir webpage, and interstingly states, "The first Rising Stars of Manga contest winners did not rise to the top by redrawing American superheroes with big eyes and round faces - this is not what manga means to us."

The contest is only open to residents of the United States. Full details and rules for the contest can be read at TOKYOPOP's webpage for the competition.
