Haruhi Hawks Japanese PS2 Game on the Streets

posted on by Egan Loo
Life-size figure attracts phone-camera-toting crowds outside Akihabara store

Japan's Messe Sanoh game and dōjinshi retail chain has placed a life-size Haruhi Suzumiya figure on the street outside its flagship store to hawk this month's The Bewilderment of Haruhi Suzumiya (Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi) game. Appropriately enough, the Haruhi figure is wearing an "Ultra Executive Producer" sash; in the signature surreal style of the original light novels and the anime series, the PlayStation 2 game has Haruhi rallying the fellow members of the SOS brigade to develop a fictional role-playing game within the actual game. The same figure was displayed at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show and exhibited at the 2007 Manga Festival in Akihabara, but this is the first time that a life-size Haruhi figure has been out in the open public.

Messe Sanoh's flagship store is located in Tokyo's otaku shopping district of Akihabara. The store began displaying the figure on December 30, a full month before the game's January 31 release. The Akiba Blog notes that fans milled all around the figure to snap photos.
