Macross Designer Mikimoto to Work on Appleseed TV Show
posted on by Egan Loo
Haruhiko Mikimoto, the character designer best known for the Macross, Gundam 0080, and Gunbuster anime, will work on the computer-graphics Appleseed: Genesis television series that is slated for 2009. The surprise announcement was made at a March 30 stage event at Tokyo International Anime Fair 2008. Director Romanov Higa (Catblue: Dynamite , TANK S.W.A.T. 01) and character voice Romi Paku (Fullmetal Alchemist's Ed, NANA anime's NANA Osaki) appeared at the event as previously announced. Paku confirmed that she will play the lead female role of Deunan Knute.
Tōru Nozaki (Flag, Witch Hunter Robin), Higa, and Ryō Karasuma have written the story treatments for all 26 episodes, and the eight of those episodes already have storyboards. The stage event showcased Mikimoto's Deunan design, as well as the anime version of the landmate armor from the original manga, pictured at right, by Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell, Ghost Hound). The Micott & Basara company is producing and sponsoring this production as it did for the two recent Appleseed films. Mikimoto had previously created designs for the experimental computer-graphics video Rayca in 2002. The Macross Frontier sequel will begin its series run this week in Japan, although Mikimoto is only involved in selected promotional artwork for the project.
