Drop of only 6,000 from first Negima: ALA ALBA bundle's 85,000-copy print run

Negima! Magister Negi Magi manga creator Ken Akamatsu announced on his personal blog on Wednesday that Kodansha will produce 79,000 copies of the second Mahō Sensei Negima! ~ Shiroki Tsubasa~ ALA ALBA original animation DVD (OAD) in Japan. This DVD will come bundled with the 24th volume of the magical school manga on November 17. Ken Akamatsu had revealed in July that the 23rd manga volume with the first ALA ALBA DVD had 82,581 pre-orders; he had then revealed from his royalty check in August that 85,000 copies were eventually published.

Akamatsu noted his surprise that the print runs between the two volumes only dropped by 6,000 — he had expected that the second manga/DVD bundle would be in the range of 50,000 copies. (Many DVD series drop significantly in sales after the first volume.) He suspected that the DVD box that came with the first manga/DVD bundle encouraged his fans to complete the collection. The 23rd manga volume was the #3 manga in sales in its first week, despite the fact the manga/DVD bundle was over eight times the cost of a typical manga volume. The less expensive limited edition of the 22nd volume, which came with a badge but no DVD, sold about 90,000 copies.
