Aniplex to screen Childhood's End at new Viz Cinema with English subs

The Japanese production company Aniplex has announced at its Otakon panel on Friday that it will screen Hiroyuki Imaishi's Gurren Lagann the Movie –Childhood's End- film with English subtitles at the Viz Cinema theater in San Francisco on September 8. The film, which is also known as Guren-hen (Crimson or Gurren Chapter), is the first part of Gainax's theatrical remake of its Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann robot action anime series. It opened in Japan last September, and the second film (Ragan-hen or Lagann Chapter) opened in Japan on April 25. Bandai Entertainment brought the original television series to North American on DVD and on the Sci Fi Channel (through Manga Entertainment).

The film had been screened without English subtitles at FanimeCon in Northern California in May. Aniplex then brought the film to Anime Expo in Los Angeles earlier this month for its English-subtitled premiere.

Viz Pictures, the live-action film affiliate of Viz Media, is opening the 143-seat Viz Cinema at the NEW PEOPLE Entertainment complex in San Francisco on August 15. The complex's grand opening will feature the first film in the live-action trilogy version of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys manga.
