Astra Manga Co-Creator Jerry Robinson Passes Away

Joker creator collaborated on 1999 science fiction comedy manga

Known for creating the Batman villain Joker, American comic book artist and Astra manga co-creator Jerry Robinson passed away on Wednesday. He was 89.

Robinson provided the original concept and collaborated with Sidra Cohn on the science fiction comedy manga's story. Shojin Tanaka drew Astra's art and Ken'Ichi OishiMedia handled the script and adaptation. Media Factory published the manga in Japan in 1999, and CPM Manga also published Astra in North America that year.

The artist worked closely with the Batman creator Bob Kane and co-created the comic's Robin character. Robinson served as president of both the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC) and the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) as well as president and editorial director of CartoonArts International and Cartoonists & Writers Syndicate (CWS). He was also a comics historian and artists' rights advocate respected as a pioneer of the American comics industry.
