Crunchyroll Adds Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202 Anime

Also: Date A Live, 1st 2 WIXOSS

Crunchyroll began streaming the first episode of Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202 on Wednesday.

The project is a seven-part theatrical anime project. The first episode premiered in Japan in February 2017, and the fifth film will premiere on May 25 in Japan. Funimation is streaming an English dub that also premiered on Wednesday.

The anime's story is set in the year 2202, three years after the Yamato's return from the planet Iscandar. The people of Earth restored their planet with the Cosmo Reverse System, and they signed a peace treaty with Garmillas. In addition to reconstruction, Earth developed a new defense fleet that includes the state-of-the-art battleship Andromeda. The Earth goes down a path of military expansion, despite Starsha Iscandar's wishes. The Yamato helps accomplish this so-called peace, but it comes at the price of many invaluable sacrifices. The goddess Teresa, who prays for tranquility in space, calls the Yamato to a new voyage. The threat of Gatlantis is sweeping over the universe and approaching Earth.

Nobuyoshi Habara (Fafner and Fafner EXODUS director, episode director and storyboard writer for Star Blazers 2199) is directing the new anime, and Harutoshi Fukui (Mobile Suit Gundam UC original novel writer, screenplay for Harlock: Space Pirate) is writing and overseeing the scripts. The late Yoshinobu Nishizaki is credited with the original work, and his son Shōji Nishizaki (Star Blazers 2199 planning, producer for Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection) is the executive producer.

Crunchyroll also announced on Tuesday that it has added the Date A Live, Date A Live II, Selector Infected Wixoss and Selector Spread Wixoss anime to its catalog.

Date A Live is available for users in the United States and Canada, while Date A Live II is available for users in the United States, Canada, South Africa, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

The 12-episode Date A Live series, based on Koushi Tachibana's light novel series of the same name, premiered in 2013. The second 10-episode season premiered in 2014. A film titled Gekijōban Date A Live: Mayuri Judgment opened in Japan in August 2015.

Funimation streamed the first and second seasons as they aired in Japan, released the first season on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in June 2014 with an English dub, and released the second season on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in March 2016 with an English dub.

Selector Infected Wixoss and Selector Spread Wixoss are available for users in the United States, Canada, South Africa, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

The Selector Infected Wixoss anime series, based on Takara Tomy's WIXOSS (pronounced like "wi-cross") card game, premiered in April 2014 in the same month that the card game launched. Selector Spread Wixoss, the anime's second season, premiered in October 2014. The Selector Destructed Wixoss anime film then opened in Japan in February 2016. The 12-episode Lostorage incited WIXOSS anime premiered in October 2016, and Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired. Crunchyroll is also streaming the currently airing Lostorage conflated WIXOSS series.

Funimation released Selector Infected Wixoss on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in September 2015 and Selector Spread Wixoss on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in June 2016.
