Game developer Nihon Falcom revealed Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, the latest entry in its Ys role-playing game series, on Wednesday. The game will launch for the PlayStation 4 in 2019.
Nihon Falcom had revealed last month that it is working on a new Ys title.
(Note: Location name romanizations are not official.)The game's story takes place in Baldeuk, northeast of Esteria in the Gria Eldlingen region. A new adventure will unfold in this "prison city" and will revolve around the mystery regarding "Monstrum," people who hold supernatural powers.
The series' familiar action role-playing game mechanics, such as free movement and jumping, and battles against giant bosses, will return for the game. Players will be able to use the "supernatural action" abilities of various Monstrum to explore levels. Players will also be able to conduct "Guild Management" in the prison city.
Nihon Falcom released Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana in Japan in May 2017, and NIS America released the game for PS4 and PS Vita in North America and Europe in September 2017. NIS America released the game on PC on April 17 after a delay from its previous January 2018 release date.
NIS America then released the game for Nintendo Switch on June 26 in North America, and on June 29 in Europe. The release included three patches to fix text issues and other issues with the game. The earlier PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions reportedly had issues with the localization following launch — NIS America apologized for the low quality in October 2017 and released a free patch on January 30.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana has sold more than 500,000 copies worldwide.
