One day I was reading Firefighter Daigo and I suddenly realized something: I didn't use to think that firefighting was totally badass. But now, I do! And that's when I realized that this has happened a lot. More than I thought. There would be something that I thought was totally ordinary and mundane, and then I saw an anime or read a manga about it and now I think it's really neat! Now I'm not talking about things like grappling ships fighting each other in space ala Outlaw Star, the description alone made me think that that would be cool to watch, or giant robots duking it out with giant drills, that's something that sounds inherently cool to me. I'm talking about every day life things that I now see in a new light as a result. What things do you now find cool because of anime or manga?
1) Ballet Appreciation sparked by: Princess Tutu (of course) -Even though I'd always liked classical music, I was still kinda "meh" on ballet itself. But between the ballet-battle fights and those lovely etudes on the DVDs, now I view ballet as a highly skilled art form that can be amazing to watch, who knew? 2) Space Appreciation sparked by: Planetes, Moonlight Mile, Twin Spica -Now I'm not talking about fantasy space here like Cowboy Bebop or Outlaw Star, but the more "you gotta do actual work up here, not pilot awesome personal spaceships" sort of space that you see in Planetes or Moonlight Mile. Garbage collecting in space, man! Now it seems like a futuristic dream job to me! But what I find interesting is the space that you have to work to get to! 3) Go Appreciation sparked by: Hikaru no Go -On the plus side, unlike 1 and 2, this is a far more feasible thing to learn! When I first saw Go my reaction was "what, is this some variation on Othello?" but other than the grid and the colors, it's nothing at all like Othello. Ironically enough, Hikaru starts off the same way, not giving the slightest damn about Go and knowing the rules about as well as I do. But as Hikaru's interest in Go grew, so did mine. Sure, I still don't really have any skill, Hikaru grew in both skill and interest, but now I'd seriously like to purchase an inexpensive Go set. And I didn't even know this game existed until I saw Hikaru no Go in a library! And then proceeded to buy the entire manga series, naturally. 4) Rock, Paper, Scissors Appreciation sparked by: Kaiji -If you've seen Kaiji, then you know that there's a rock, paper, scissors sort of game going on. When I first heard this I was like "Whu? That sounds kinda boring" but by the end I thought it was pretty awesome. 5) Local Bakeries Appreciation sparked by: Antique Bakery -Sure, I've always enjoyed sweets and the grocery store's bakery near me makes awesome danishes, but now I really want to search out local bakeries and see what they've got! I feel like we don't have near enough of them in America and my favorite Scottish bakery closed down without warning about 5 years ago, leaving a hole in my heart ever since. But Fumi Yoshinaga is trying to make a foodie out of me, one of the pickiest eaters on the planet, who knew! |

Roses. I've never been a fan of flowers, especially those given as a presents. Bouquets for me still seems as a terrible waste in two ways: the death of picked flowers and waste of symbols. Utena reminded me flower code I had been taught before I learnt how to read. That's a pity that just a few people remember how many things can be said without one word just by flowers given. Since then I never rely on florist, but if I have to buy flowers I use my knowledge, hoping that anyone can read this.
Trains It's hardly to say that it was new impression for me, but isn't a Galxy Railway simple prolongation of the oldest train tropes? The train exploring space isn't less magical than the ordinary one that carry people without visible human intervention. The train was always a symbol of great hopes brought by civilisation- pure from evil associations, first form of massive transport free from natural and geographical limits. No matter where I go if it's just possible I choose the train just to enjoy this form. Pocket watches- heavy, inconvenient, awesome:) |

This is a mix of manga and anime:
Sports: If I read a sports manga or watch a sports anime, I can get sucked in and start watching more of that particular sport, at least for a while. And then I usually realize that the manga/anime version is more interesting. At least that was the case for boxing. I loooooved Hajime No Ippo, and I actually looked up a couple games, but, irl, it's still too violent for me. But I do still find aspects fascinating, like the sheer willpower it takes to stay at a certain weight... or to go up or down into a new weight bracket. Sports manga/anime that have made me more interested in their featured sport: Eyeshield 21, Hajime no Ippo, Big Windup, Slam Dunk, Cross Game, Princess Nine, Taisho Baseball Girls, Initial D. Go: Like classicalzawa, Hikaru no Go made me completely interested in the game strategy, although I have not played, as I am horrible at strategic games. Ballet: Princess Tutu did not really make me more interested in ballet (although I do consider this one of my favorite anime), but the manga Swan sure did. This is a beautiful manga, if a bit melodramatic, and makes one appreciate the extreme training levels that dancers go through on their way to greatness. I'd also like to go read the manga one day while listening to the corresponding music pieces. Bread: Yakitate!! Japan, in its early stages made me want to try tons of different kinds of breads. Although it got to ridiculous levels of absurdness by the third arc (and therefore much less interesting to me), the first 2 arcs where Azuma is trying to get into Pantasia, and later competes against the other Pantasia branches I still find very entertaining and interesting with all the bread lore. |

No, I am FKF on MAL, the thread seemed to be going well over there and I wanted to see what people over on ANN thought too. Oh man, I hadn't even thought of product placement! But yeah, Tiger and Bunny certainly seems good for that, I wonder if Code Geass got anyone with Pizza Hut come to think of it. It didn't really get me, I've always liked Pizza Hut just fine. Then again, not a lot of anime have product placements since it seems harder to justify them. |

Well in the US version of Code Geass, they took out anything related to Pizza Hut.
Not really sure if anime has made me like anything that I was not previously interested in before. Though it has made me try some of the foods they show in them (like Pokky & Ramune for example). |

Oh man, speaking of Ramune, I almost forgot that RahXephon has made me actually want to buy ramune, even though I normally hate it. Actually, the raspberry flavor is pretty good! I still dislike the original flavor though. I do believe this is also known as The Red Stapler Effect, seem Lefaron got it from Tiger & Bunny for Pepsi.
But now every time I go to the asian food market, I look at the Ramune and entertain buying one, hard to pull myself away actually. |

I assume this was from FMA? If so, I'm in the same boat brother. I alwasy thought they were for old people and "dorks". I had one when I was a little kid because my grandpa had one and I thought they were cool. Thus, that was a long time ago though. However, after watching FMA, I was so tempted to order an awesome one off of Amazon. Lol. |

When I was in high school, I always hated baseball. We didn't play it that often, but they didn't really explain all the rules, so I didn't get it that well. This wasn't the worst part though. It always went like this: when our team played in the field, I rarely got the chance to get a ball. When we were at bat, I most of the time waited til I was up, then 1. missed and sat through the round, or 2. hit the ball and didn't get the chance to run that much. Basically, most of the time I wasn't doing anything.
Years later, I watched Cross Game. I was on the edge of my seat every game! Baseball seemed a lot cooler all of a sudden
