Well, I haven't seen too many live action Japanese movies except for Versus and GTO. Versus is a nice action/horror movie and has some pretty good special effects. GTO the movie stinks, but I love the live action TV series.

Most of the Asian movies I've seen are of the Hong Kong/China variety. I like Crouching Tiger, The Eye, Hero, Once Upon in A Time in China, and Shaolin Soccer just to name a few. I also want to see House of Flyinger Daggers sometime, but haven't had a chance to. I'm trying to decide wheter I should wait for an R1 DVD release or if I should just buy the R3 2-disc Special Edition.

I haven't seen too many Korean movies, but for all of you who are romantics, you MUST see the movie My Sassy Girl. It is THE perfect date movie. It's so cute and funny, yet still has that sense of melodrama to keep it real.

And after you've seen that, I suggest Windstruck. It's the same director and same beautiful girl from My Sassy Girl, but it's a LOT sadder, in my opinion. It still maintains some of the cuteness, but you'll see what I mean by "sadder" Anime cry.

Battle Royale one and two, the ringu series, and on the hong kong front i recomend everyone watches A Chinese Ghost Story. Absolutly mental, great love story, great characters esp my names sake Swordsman Yen. He has everything, kick ass fighting powers, a solo song and dance routine, and is extremely funny. The specials are well done considering its from the 80's, and in many ways inspiration for crouching tiger hidden dragon, with flying swordsman and such. Absolute masterpiece of cinema, watch it.

The Happiness of the Katakuris is one of the funniest, daffiest movies I've ever seen. A family starts a hotel, and people keep dying there. It's a musical, its got claymation, it's awesome.

There's an old Japanese movie from the sixties called Cruel Story of Youth that's a tough drama about a dangerous love affair. There's a scene where a guy eats an apple that reminded me of the elevator scene in Eva.

Zhang Ziyi is chinese though.

Anyways, I've watch quite a few japanese movie. Some of the noteworthy ones are:

Azumi: Assassin type movie staring a cute japanese idol. Sword play and tragic story aside, it's a good movie even though the acting was kind of stiff.

Returner: Matrix Meet E.T. in this Sci-fi action flick. Story is interesting, had a bad ass villian and staring Japanese/taiwanese heart throb Takeshi Kaneshiro.

Princess Blade:
Base on the Classic Lady Snow Blood. An average sword movie but sold pretty well.

Seven Samurai: Old Japanese Classic on Samurai, must see before watching Samurai 7 (anime).

Twilight Samurai: Another Samurai Flick that's base on a novel. Good character, good story.

I've seen a couple more but they're not worth noting, just mention: Wild Criminal, Zero Women, Zatoichi, Tokyo Mafia.

But an HK movie you should watch out for is: Kung Fu Hustle. It surpass Shaolin Soccer as the highest grossing HK movie, which is expected since it star Stephen Chow. It was also a hit in japan.

Hey, I remember you! Your thread got locked in the Org for being off topic. Razz

And I think the only Japanese live-action movie I saw that wasn't based on an anime is this comedy movie that has cops in it. I seriously forgot the name of it, but it did use the song "Rhythm and Police" for the ending credits.

I remember, too. I couldn't believe they locked it just because it wasn't "anime, music, or video related". Confused

Wasabi was a pretty good one. A mystery/comedy about a French cop who visits Japan on the trail of a murderer, where everyone apparently talks dubbed-over, even when it's their own voices redubbed. Smile

I've seen lots. Akira Kurosawa and Takeshi Kitano are the two big names. And I've seen a lot of random stuff...

Some ones that I can think of now:

Tampopo: It's a movie all about food. It's mostly about these two guys who try and help this lady with her noodle bussiness. There is also some short off-shoots in the movie, all having to do with food.

Wild Zero: This one is a hilarious zombie movie starring Japanese punk band Guitar Wolf. Some people don't like it, but I think it's great.

Red Shadow: Akakage: Based on an older Japanese TV show. It was an interesting action/comedy movie about Ninja. Wasn't Amazing, but it was still good.

P.S. Here's a tip for finding stuff: Check your local Library. Depending on how big the A/V section is, you might be able to find some movies in the foreign films section. Plus it should be a lot cheaper than Hollywood Video or Blockbuster.

Odoru Daisasousen (Bayside Shakedown 1 and 2)... and it didn't USE the song Rhythm and Police... the song was originally the theme for the show and movies before appearing in DDR, Pop'n Music and other such places.

I do like those 2 movies. Other than that, I'm sad to say that I've hated most of the Japanese movies that I've seen. They just don't appeal to me for many reasons.

D'oh. I forgot about Battle Royale. I love that movie. It's so... different. I mean, you just would never expect a movie like that in the U.S. It's super violent, yet still carries a strong (and bloody) message, though not being Japanese it probably doesn't affect me as much, but it's still a well directed message for what it's worth.

Oh, and I saw House of Flying Daggers, good movie. The ending was a bit abrubt, but I really like the scenery and music. The story was pretty good too, it had a few nice twists around the middle, but was kind of predictable towards the end. I believe they cut some things out of the U.S. release, but knowing the crazy Asian movie fan I am, I'll probably get both the R3 and R1 versions eventually Razz.

I was a little unhappy when they locked your thread on AMV because I didn't get an answer to my question Sad .

But since you started it here lets see if anyone can help me out here.

Maybe you could tell me the title of this movie i saw at anime-fest 2 years ago. It was about these guys in high school and they decide to join this swim team, but they end up becoming a sincronized swim team. It was one of the funniest movies i have ever seen and i have always wanted to know the name of it so i could purchase it. thanks. Very Happy

The Japanese Shall We Dance? was a delight. If you like Maison Ikkoku type stuff, check it out. I haven't seen the American remake.

Yeah, Asian Movies are interesting. Not only in action, also in horror, comedy, drama, etc.

The last one i saw was takashi Shimizu, Ju-on, all of them,
and then the remake hollywood did, the grudge (awful by the way, compare with the original version).
Ying xiong (aka Hero) visually stunning piece of art, really beautiful movie. I enyoyed every second of it. Also Wo hu cang long (aka Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) This is chinesse but its a good movie too.

A comedy like Siu lam juk kau (aka Shaolin Soccer) it was nice...
Smile

Sat sau ji wong (aka King of Assassins) that was good too.

Hasta Siempre.

Japanese movies? Sure, I've seen plenty! There was this one movie, right, and in it there was this chick who cosplayed as Ayanami Rei, and then these three guys started stripp... oh, you didn't mean THOSE kind of movies, huh.....

Well, I've plenty of the other kind too. I have seen most of the movies mentioned above, and also some that weren’t. Battlefield baseball is one I loved which hasn't been mentioned yet. But god that Ayanami cosplay movie sure was hot....
