Only on volume 6 eh...the best is ahead of you my friend. It's a classic saga. While it's true that there is a bit of repitition with some of the stories in the middle, and it takes a bit for the main story to get off the ground, the main plot is superb. It;s one of the few manga I've read that have totally absorbed me in the physical and philisophical journey of its characters.
As for Samurai Executioner, I would recommend it, but understand it's a very diffrent beast than Lone Wolf. While it too is a series of short stories exploring themes of honor and vengence in feudal Japan, its told for the most part from the criminals standpoint, with the main character often playing a supporting role. Despite this, it still has done a fairly good job developing Asaemon's character and making him interesting. It isn't the sweeping epic that is Lone Wolf, but it's still a cinematic and well writen piece of samurai manga.

Perhaps I need to read more of Lone Wolf and Cub (finally got all 28 volume), but the art was very messy for the first few volume. Messy in a way that the character kind of blend in with each other and a lot of the swordsman look the same. I felt the art did improve as the series develope. Some of the stories were classic, others were just okay.

I really like Samurai Executioner though. The artwork was more clean and refine. The story itself was more spread out and took it's time to develope. Maybe there's something you might not understand as you're reading it, by the end of that story's chapter, you'll be like "wow it makes sense now".
Eventually, I'll pick up this whole series too, SC felt like a little brother to Lone Wolf and Cub since they're one in the same.
