I have been watching Japanese animation for much of the nineteen years that I have currently been alive, and I have noticed that there are many gimmicks used in anime that are not seen anywhere else. One of these gimmicks that confuses me most is nosebleeds. In some anime series, primarily comical ones, when a male character sees a nude female character, blood begins to trickle from his nostrils. I find this to be very unusual, as I have never seen this phenomenon happen in reality. Could someone please explain this gimmick to me?

It has something to with the male being a virgin, I think. I'm not sure on the details, but another way to look at it would be to just call it a "head rush" (if you'll pardon the potentially perverted double entendre...

I'm not sure if virginity has anything to do with it. It's probably just easier to show visually than showing the blood rushing to another part of the male anatomy.

I thought that blood was supposed to flow to another portion of male anatomy during states of arousal.
EDIT: one3rd beat me to it. |

Actually it is a very old old-wives-saying. Dont really know how it came to be. Its just a part of the folclore.

I read in Guilles Poitras's Anime Companion that it is from an old wives tale that ecchi thoughts will give you a nosebleed.
The most memerable that I have seen was from Cosplay Complex when spoiler[Jenny gets a nosebgleed over seeing young Athena in a miko outfit!] |

It's kind of funny and dumb at the same time when it happens.

Don't forget about the "explosive rocket" variety of nosebleed that sends people flying backwards through the air |

Actually, this can happen in reality, albeit not as commonly or violently as in anime. It is much more common for people who regularly have nosebleeds to experience this embarrassment. I am telling this from personal experience, back when I was just getting into ... stuff.
Nosebleeds, for me at least, used to come from many activities, especially after running long and hard and taking many quick breaths through the nose. When I was younger, and got aroused, I also breathed heavily, damaging already weak tissue. I've only bled once or twice, but most of the time had at least the scent of blood coming from my nose. Luckily I outgrew this stage, but I'm certain there are people who may have it worse, let's see if anyone would step forward. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/medical_notes/262462.stm "Nosebleeds are caused by the rupture of a small blood vessel called a capilliary in the nose. The most common cause of this is injury - a good bash to the nose will result in bleeding. The other main cause is dryness of the inside of the nose. A dry climate or heated indoor air irritates and dries out nasal membranes, causing crusts that may itch and then bleed when picked." edit: I'd also like to include that, perhaps, these nosebleeds were normal and not caused by looking at stuff. Maybe they were going to happen anyways, who knows? |

I seem to remember seeing a photo of an old guy **stops to go look for pic and finds it** who is called Master Roshi (Anime Insider, April 31 issue, page 52 "Tokyo Bloodbank...") is shown having a massive nosebleed. Could this also signify "old, dirty pervert" as well?
BTW what anime is Master Roshi from? |

Master Roshi is from the original Dragon Ball series. He is considered by many anime fans to be the dirtiest, most perverted of all dirty old men in Japanese animation. |

So, compared to Master Roshi, the Grandfather of Hino Rei of Sailor Moon must be a Boy Scout. |

At times I have occasionally become prone to nosebleeds (due to the weather or other factors) and yet I never once had this ever happen to me or have I ever heard of it happening to anyone else who was prone to bleed. As per my understanding, even in Japan arousal is not actually associated with nosebleeds in any serious sense. Rather, as stated previously, it's more of an "old wives tale" in a similar vein as telling a child not to make a funny face because it will become 'frozen' that way. Thus, if you have actually experienced such an event I would probably assume you are the rare individual who imitates art rather than the other way around. One thing I do remember from my childhood days were the poor souls who had been cauterized to prevent future nosebleeds. You could often see the unmistakable scars where the electrodes had done their damage leading into each nostril. I thought that was one of the cruelest things you could have done to your child back then. Even if you were anesthetized during the actual procedure itself it still seemed like it would be rather difficult to get over the scarring on your face. Amazingly I rarely notice such scars on adults, so I guess if you can put up with them through childhood they'll eventually become less noticeable. Did you or your parents ever consider such a procedure? |
