In volume 16 or 17 or Rurouni Kenshin they do a move called Mugenjin. Do you think this inspired the names in Samurai Champloo Mugen and Jin? I think so. I thought it was cool.

I haven't gotten to those volumes of Rurouni Kenshin graphic novels, but I'm almost 100% sure that Nobuhiro Watsuki did not take those names from Samurai Champloo. The Samurai Champloo series came out in Japan in 2004. The Rurouni Kenshin graphic novel volumes 16 and 17 both came out in 1997. If anything, Samurai Champloo copied from Rurouni Kenshin. If you don't believe me, then check out the vintage section of the Samurai Champloo encyclopedia page and the Releases page of Rurouni Kenshin.

You seem to have misread, Sharingan. He is asking if Champloo copied Kenshin.
Personally I doubt it. While I haven't seen many charcters with the name Mugen, I have seen countless characters named Jin. Admittedly, it is an interesting coinsidence. It could be an homage to Kenshin, but I remain skeptical. |

Oh, my bad. I guess that's what I get for skimming through the opening post. Sorry for the misinterpretation. Either way, I didn't lose my time doing the research. I have nothing else to do at the moment. But once again, sorry for misreading, Mr.Roboto.

To answer your main question, no. I do not think their names were inspired by Rurouni Kenshin. Mugen's name is kind of a pun. Mugen means infinite in Japanese. If you have seen all of Samurai Champloo, you should know why Mugen's name is appropriate. spoiler[Mugen basically can survive things that usually would kill normal people. In one incident, he miraculously survives a boatful of explosives. In other incidents, he survives many fatal duels with wounds that would kill normal people.]
Check out this entry on Mugen and Jin from Samurai Champloo here: Mugen and Jin. No offense but I think you might have read Rurouni Kenshin wrong. I have read all of it and have never heard of a move called the Mugenjin. To the best of my knowledge, Mugenjin is the name of Makoto Shishio's sword. spoiler[Shishio knows that swords get dull over time as they are used. To prevent this, the swordsmith who made Kenshin's reverse blade makes the balde of the Mugenjin serated like a saw. This way, Shishio does not have to worry about dulling. He also has killed countless people and thier body fat remains on the sword allowing him to use his fire-based attacks.] That is an interesting take but the link explains how they came up with Mugen and Jin's names in Samurai Champloo. I hope this helps. |
