This could either be really, really good or really, really bad.
A quick bit of background first. Kyoryu King (Dinosaur King) is a digital card game akin to the beetle fighting game Mushiking. The player picks a species of dinosaur, and combats other species through a combination of a rock-paper-scissors system and special move cards. There are twenty-four dinosaur species, ranging from well-knowns like Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops fo super obscures like Amargasaurus and Irritator, and each one is assigned one of five elements, from which their special moves come from. The game is also slated to hit the US, obviously under the translated title, Dinosaur King. Why do I bring this up? Firstly, there an anime based on Kyoryu King that starts in four days. Secondly, I'm a total dinosaur nut, and have been ever since I was little. The amount of knowledge I've gained on the subject never ceases to bewilder people, and the idea of an anime like this intrigues me. If done right, this could be the anime equivalent of Walking with Dinosaurs, with each episode accurately and educationally depicting one of the twenty-four species featured in the game. The CG models are gorgeous and ridiculously accurate, and with the attention to detail Japan can put in its nerdly pursuits, a scientifically accurate series from them could be a real treat. On the other hand, though, in order to pimp some of the special attacks (which include firey bites, shooting lightning out of horns, and throwing ice crystals with the animal's tail), this show could go in the completely opposite direction and be some mortifyingly awful shounen fighting crapfest with dinosaurs in place of muscular space monkeys, ninjas, and grim reapers. Trying to figure out what direction the show is going to take has about driven me batty. As I said, this could be really, really good or really, really bad. Any thoughts? |

I'm hoping it will be a generic shounen action anime, but with Dinosaurs instead of people. Bonus points if they use cards in the process, because watching a T-Rex play cards with those cute little arms would be awesome.

Unfortunately, it seems we're both wrong. I went to the English language site for the game and found a PDF file that tells the actual plot summary of the game. Something about some kids finding a magic stone that lets them communicate with dinosaurs and bring them back from the dead. It's like some Yu-Gi-Oh/Duel Masters rehash with anime character designs straight out of Beyblade. So awful I want to cry for what could have been.
Good job Japan. You had a good thing going and you just pissed it away. |

When I saw kids riding on dinosaurs, I knew you'd be disappointed.

I can just see it now: 4Kids' "King of Dinosaurs" on FoxBox at 9:00 AM Saturday morning following an hour run of Pokemon Season 2372587324683 and followed by Yu-Gi-Oh GMFPX in the year...I dunno, 2009.
Aaaaaand all the neighborhood kids debating which of the dinosaurs is the strongest, and whose "Dinosaur Capture Card" (or whatever the hell) is the most effective. Exciting, I'd say. |

Hmm, seemed like another Digimon type thing to me, but if they're communicating with dead dinosaurs, what the hell is up with that? I feel for you Nagisa, when I was trying to check out the site, it did seem a little interesting. Now I don't know if I should put my time into it
