Alright, Tony said someone could start this thread provided there is heavy scrutiny to prevent the age old tired sub vs. dub debate. There's a thread and it's miraculously still open so take any sub vs dub talk there. This thread is for people to list what dubs they feel are of high quality. Of course like any other thread you must tell us WHY you feel the dub you mention is of high quality. Feel free to also mention any dubs that you think have set the bar or provided a high benchmark for dubs in general. Obviously again explain why. Since Tony said this needs to be monitored closely I will personally report any thread that so much as mentions the word sub in here to prevent it from going downhill.
I'll get the boat moving and mention one dub I personally think is very good. I think the Fruits Basket dub was exceptionally well done. The voices matched the characters very nicely. To me each voice suited the character they represented. The lip flaps were kept to a minimum and the voice track flowed very nicely with the right amounts of emotion showed at the right times. Overall I think the Fruits Basket dub is one of the best I've heard and had some of the best direction as well. Not on ly did the voices work well they worked when they were supposed to and were "on time." Rahxephon dub. I watched the series dubbed first and got really attached to the voices. Everyone's voice showed the right amount of emotion, fit the character, a lot of them were really memorable and couldn't have been cast any better. Of course there were flaws (minor ones, IMO), but I was really impressed with it overall.
When I then watched the subs, I couldn't get into it. It just felt like they weren't showing any emotion compared to the dub... |

Hmmm. I have not given the Fruits Basket or RahXephon dubs more than a cursory listen. Maybe I'll have to go back and check them out more carefully.
Other than Cowboy Bebop which is almost inevitably brought up when talking about good dubs, I very much enjoy the dub for .hack//SIGN. I think the English VAs are well matched to their characters and they also do a nice job of maintaining the subdued and thoughtful atmosphere of the series. The Japanese track just seemed a little too much like "typical adventure anime voices" and it didn't sit well with me. |

Hellsing Ultimate dub. One, Crispin Freeman's portrayal of Alucard definetly netted me into the dub, as well as hearing other VAs portraying characters when the stage setting of the series is indeed England. What was funny about the Vatican members were them talking with a Scottish accent, aren't they supposed to be in Rome? Jan and the dirty dialogue that he had fit him well, he had a hilarious attitude about the whole affair, I'd say he has the best dirty dialogue I've heard yet. I have high hopes for the Nazis.

I know a lot of people feel the same about this (including some sub fans), but I think the FMA dub is one of the best out there. Ed does sound a bit old for his age and Al's voice is occasionally irritating (just a little), but overall I felt the dub VA's did a better job of expressing their characters. Not that I have anything against the original seiyuu as they are quite talented as well, but IMO their perfromances weren't as good as the english VA's.

I'd say:
Ergo Proxy definitely fits the bill of an excellent dub. The acting is very well done. I also think the voices fit the characters very well. I first saw this series fansubbed and found that after hearing the English track I prefered it over the original Japanese. This is from the same dubbing studio, New Generation Pictures, that's done several I've really liked. Haibane Renmei, also by New Generation, is another great example of perfection. Again all the voices fit the characters extremely well, and the show was very well acted by all the staff involved. Recently I've really been enjoying the dub for Black Lagoon mostly because the original Japanese has some really terrible Engrish. Since the dub is obviously English this fixes a lot of the akward and out of place swearing and makes it sound far more natural and clever. In addition the VA work is great and the voices have grown on me. Gunslinger Girl is another of my favorites. I think everyone sounds great I also prefer this dub over the original Japanese track. I generally enjoy most of Funimation's dubs nowadays, however, I thought this was especially worth mentioning because I was highly impressed with the level of acting in this one. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, it's sequel season 2nd Gig, and the film Solid State Society I believe definitely rank up there among the best as well. Superb acting all arround by everyone in the cast, even minor characters. They especially did a good job recasting The Major I think personally. I didn't really like the girls voice who played the character in the first film. Some honorable mentions go to Le Chevalier D'Eon for getting the French and Rusian word prounciations dead on, and Elfen Lied, Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Lunar Legend Tsukihime, the Full Metal Panic series, and Witch Hunter Robin for also being especially solid in the dub department as well. |

Hmmm... I have the opposite view on RahXephon's(top 3 favorite series) dub. I gave the dub a try, but I had to switch to the subtitles. I found the English actors didn't qiute commit enough for me. RahXephon has alot of screaming and heavy acting... if not done well, dubs like this tend to fall flat. One of the shows I'm watching now is Eureka Seven, and I'm loving the dub they produced. Crispin Freeman is great as always, and there is no weakness in my view in the other main characters, or the supporting cast... of which there are many. I was very pleased with the dubbing in Ergo proxy, The "big three" in this series impressed me a great deal. Unlike a series like RahXephon, where the acting is more "in you face"... Ergo Proxy's acting has to be much more suttle. Although the acting is suttle, there is no drama lost... something I would think to be difficult. One dub that has always stuck out in my mind is Now and Then, Here and There... kind of an oldy. Even though I havn't seen it in a while, this was the first series I thought of when first seeing this thread. I can still hear Lord Hamdo screaming at Abelia, it gives me the shivers. I really can't think of another character that done better that Lord Hamdo. He was crazy, powerful, spineless, loving, and hateful... I feel it was a masterful performance |

Due to the time of the last post, and Tony mentioning it would be ok to start this thread is why I did. Plus honestly after almost 3 months with no posts in I had forgotten about that thread all together.
 If you want to simply add these posts to that thread Tony and then lock this one go for it. that one is older and has many more pages to it. I'm just always weary of reviving threads (when I remember them heh) over 2 months old.

The only thing I didn't like about the FMA dub, is they use alot of adults to voice over for children. For example, Nina. And when Ed and Al were asking the towns people about Dr. Marcoh. I found that kinda annoying, since it was plainly obvious not a kid's voice. But otherwise, I agree, everyone else seemed really good. One anime that I thought had an excellent English dub is Inuyasha. Unfortunatly I think it was plagued by poor dialog, though. I thought Richard Cox was excellent as Inuyasha. I'm suprised I don't recognize his voice in more animes. |

I've always liked the dub for Scrapped Princess. I feel that the voices worked really well with each of the characters. Crispin Freeman did really well as Shannon. I think that it was one of his best roles.

In fact, along with Bebop. That's one of the best dubbing jobs. Others I'd recommend: Inuyasha. Watching it on Cartoon Network. I see no voices out of place here. El-Hazard. With the limited English talent of the 90's - this one came together just fine. GoldenBoy. The English voice acting job for Kentaro was perfect. Completely brings out the perverse nature of the character -- for some excruciatingly funny dialog. Tenchi Muyo. For each character, the voices were accurately matched. I don't know about y'all -- but I really like Sailor Moon in English. As much as this series suffered the cruelty of episode editing, cuts, and voice actor changes -- at least the first couple of seasons sounded purely silly. Enough for sh*ts and giggles. 
Adults voicing for children parts. Here's the thing. It's always been that way. America, Japan, France, where-ever. One of the younger voice acting jobs I am aware of happen to be Aya Hirano (at 17) for Kiddy Grade. Whoever voiced Chiyo-chan in Azumanga was also just as old. |

Chiyo actually sounded like a 10 year old. There's probably a few adults in this world that can do children's voices really really well. The people I mentioned for FMA IMO are not any of them.
I also agree with Bebop and Trigun having very excellent dubs. God, it's been so long since I've watched many animes, I'm having trouble remembering what had good dubs and what didn't. |
