In case you don't know, 34 million yen is equal to US$300,427.74, which is rather reasonable.

Apparently the police were unable to prove he was playing the mobile game. So I doubt they have a case in that regard.

Still they might be able to find him responsible for the death, depending on the details of how the accident unfolded.

So in Japan you can run someone over and get less than 2 years in prison for it? Is vehicular manslaughter not something people are charged with over there? I just....don't understand.

Just like in the United States it depends on who was at fault (and by how much) and how the accident unfolded, None of that information was provided. The police suspected he was playing that mobile game, but couldn't prove it. Which probably means he wasn't playing it.

So there goes away the most serious charge. The problem in Japan is that motorists are almost always at fault to some degree, even when they are not; when dealing with accidents involving pedestrians and bicycles/motorcycles.

So we will never know if he was actually negligent. Just too little information.

300k? Sheesh in the US they'd be asking for at least 10 times that much. Hell I'm pretty sure there was someone who got 50 million recently just for being unwillingly videorecorded while she was naked.

When it's an accident (as in not deliberate) then they are more lenient with the punishment. If it was deliberate, you can bet he'd serve a much longer sentence,

There are basically two reasons a lawyer would file a suit for an outrageous amount: the first is to induce a desire to settle without going to court and the second is that it's not exactly common to get more than you sued for, even if that would still be a reasonable amount. Mind-bogglingly high awards tend to get reduced by the trial judge or on appeal, anyway(eg, the famous coffee case was reduced to $640k before appeal).
