Median wages of various categories should be reported rather than average wages.

newsflash, entry level jobs have entry level wages.
Thankfully, it looks like inbetween both will keep on being pushed to countries where 1k usd per month nets you a good quality of life and that it will also get pushed to automation/ai; Which means that it will become like software where entry levels jobs will eaither cease to exist or will be much harder so that they feel like completely different jobs. |

I agree that their is a push towards outsourcing for in-between animators but while that is good for corporate profits it is bad for Japanese animators. It means fewer animation jobs and less opportunity to gain the experience for the better animation jobs which over time will also be outsourced. The best solution would be to increase wages for in-between animators and while that would have short term negatives it would far better for the anime industry in the long term. |

$12k is not an entry level wage in a first world country. It needs to be increased right away. |

To put this in perspective, the lowest reported wage at McDonald's for a "crew member" (ie, not a cashier) is $7/hour. Full time nets you $280 a week, which translates to $14,560 a year before taxes. Not including taxes, people working full-time at an American McDonald's make *more* money than Japanese in-between animators who frequently work overtime. That's just insane.

That's assuming these people are working full time. Without knowing the exact hours someone works we can't say. Averages only say so much. Japan also might have a lower minimum wage for where they people are working. |

The fundamental picture also doesn't change very much (i.e., still looks quite bleak -- worse, actually) even if we attempt to account for differences between countries' local prices using Purchasing Power Parity: >>> 1250000./101.373 12330.699495921004 It looks somewhat better (albeit still not great) if we use the "Big Mac Index" (but I'm not sure it's sensible to index peoples' pay to how much McDonald's they can buy!): >>> 1250000./((3.5/5.51)*109.48) 17974.581136802546 Though that does make me wonder what things would look like if we did separate comparisons on 'typical' baskets of food, housing, etc. |
