As Watsuki is still rights holder for Kenshin, I can not in good conscience support this film. Nor do I wish to see it licensed in the west. I personally hope it bombs and that we won’t hear from him again for a long time.

The wig looks a little bit silly so I hope that it's better in motion. :l
Still stoked that they're actually adapting the final arc.

The Seisouhen (or "Reflection") OAV didn't even adapt a story from the manga. I'm pretty sure Watsuki said it wasn't canon. There is, like, a teensy flash of Jinchuu in there though. As for supporting Watsuki by supporting this project, it is a matter of separating art from the artist. I definitely wouldn't wish the project to fail considering the cast and crew involved with the project.

What about all the people involved in the making of the movie? The ones actually making it, who are devoting their blood, sweat, tears, & time to making this, a project intended for the fans who supported them through all the years?

Do they deserve it have it bomb on them?

Yep. Maybe they should've worked on another project.

If you give money to this, you risk giving money to someone who is gonna support the child porn industry. This isn't a case of art from artist, it's a thing that causes actual harm.

Sadly life is more complex than that. You can't black & white it like a child.

I have no plans to see this movie, but:

My understanding is that under Shueisha's standard contract, manga artists do not receive royalties from live-action movie adaptations. Per fellow Jump artist Sorachi Hideaki, they get absolutely nothing but the one-time payment for the film rights:

Sorachi Hideaki wrote:
To tell the naked truth, regardless of how many people watch the film or how much the gross earnings are, not a single yen goes to the author. We are only paid an upfront license fee. The amount we’re paid is peanuts in comparison to the overall box office gross. The majority of the profits go to filthy unscrupulous companies such as Shueisha [...] Releasing individual manga volumes is way more profitable.

There is certainly a chance that the manga will get new sales if the movie is popular...but that's far from a sure thing, given that any potential readers will get lots of results like "serialization suspended because of the author's awful crimes" when they search for the title.

Thanks for this info, that makes me really happy to hear that the author won't be getting any money based on how well the film does. I'm still pissed he was given any money at all for the rights, but at least people who want to go see the film won't have that on their conscience.

I love Kenshin, it's an important story to me but I'm just never going to pay for anything related to it again.

Not wanting to give someone money because he might spend that money on child pornography isn't being childish. I think he should have been blacklisted from the manga industry.

I had thought that same way,and not that long ago. Yes,Watsuki should never have done this. It's a crime that I consider worthy of capital punishment and it forced me to give up anything related to the series for a very long time (like getting rid of my manga and dvds). However,it can't be denied that it is a beautiful story, one that I have fallen back in love with. And trust me,it's very hard to separate the artist from their work but it's the story that compells me to enjoy it again and not the creator's vile acts.

The fact that he's not getting royalties from this is a bonus, and I am so excited that we finally get to see the Jinchuu arc done in a decent manner.

It's probably good to note that one can love a work of art, but still not want to support the creator with money. On a less extreme matter, Harry Potter is one of my favorite book series from my childhood and I still intend to reread the series and buy certain products, but I will buy third-party if I need to because I do not want to support J.K.Rowling, mostly due to some major ideological differences that matter a lot to me personally.

But that said, I do think the argument that those involved in the films should definitely reap the benefits of their labor still counts. They were in this for the long haul before the controversey and these films are one of the best live action adaptions of a manga I've seen. Fans wanting to see the film should definitely make their own informed decision and I don't think anyone should be shamed if they decide to spend money on it (even if it turns out the author made more money directly or indirectly from the films).

For myself, I have bought all the BDs thus far, but I will skip out of the theater run and probably wait until the BD is on sale at GEO to buy it.

I find it highly ironic that you refuse to even consider that the author may have learned his lesson and reformed, considering that Rurouni Kenshin is a story about forgiveness and redemption.

While nearly all of us would agree that child pornography is vile, arguing that someone is “worthy of capital punishment” for a crime that was apparently possessing pornographic DVDs that were LEGAL in Japan less than a decade ago is a bit over the top, isn’t it? The Japanese legal system punished Watsuki and no doubt he’s lost money - perhaps millions of dollars - from VIZ cancelling the Hokkaido arc from NA release. Why do people who have not even viewed the evidence in the case think they know better than the prosecutors who pursued the case against Watsuki? That’s a lynch mob mentality not the rule of law.

That was my opinion, and while others may disagree with it,I won't argue their right to do so.

It got back to serialization a few months after though and still being one of the biggest sellers per volume in Japan.

It's just Viz decided to not bring it Hokkaido Arc back to West, and not like I understand the reason why.
