I’m not actually that surprised that Einstürzende Neubauten were referenced, considering they were actually pretty popular in Japan in the 80s. They’re also not that obscure if you’re into the more underground music scenes of the 80s and 90s. Sure, they’re not particularly mainstream, but they did have more success and recognition than other similar groups. I remember discovering them on Radio 1990 and Night Flight on the USA Network back in the 80s - they were too weird for MTV, but not too weird for all US cable TV.
