It's a driving mystical story about a young monk who fights against spiritual demons to defend the people with meditation practice -- and it is based on the actual life of 'Rencho', the monk that history calls Daishonin Nichiren, or "Solar Lotus."

When the historical Rencho lived, Japan was divided and controlled by men of the sword who sought obeisance via deadly feudal implication.

As a man who preached loyalty to the original Buddha, Rencho spoke out fiercely in the name of peace -- and when police and bad monks with cruel and impersonal philosophies attacked him and tried to take his life, MIRACLES would appear, as if the monk were protected by the deities themselves...

The story varies between light hearted fun with jokes -- and dreamlike 'magic sequences' with spiritual manifestations pushing back and forth to protect or attack the youthful practitioner of buddho-dharma...

a fanciful tale of Japan, with roles played by monks, swordsmen and gods.

Three Days of the life of Young Rencho:
THE TATSU-NO-KUCHI PERSECUTION

September 11-12-13, 1271

The Lotus Sutra predicts that a real practitioner of the sutra will be persecuted in many ways and also predicts that the practitioner will be protected by divine beings.

St. Nichiren's life was full of persecutions and salvation by deities.

His hut was burnt down.

He was beaten by sticks and stones, exiled to an isolated peninsula and island, attacked with swords, and almost beheaded.

Every time when he faced these persecutions, he was saved.

Among these persecutions, Tatsu-no-kuchi Persecution was one the most dramatic! But there were many trials in Rencho's life, as well as happy moments...

1271-Rencho was arrested and without a trial he was immediately taken to be beheaded for preaching peace in the time when swordsmen sought dominion through violence...Rencho was put on horseback and led through the town of Kamakura to the execution ground.

The government at that time
were determined to punish foolish talk of peace
with PUBLIC EXECUTION as a message and a lesson to others.

Far away in India, demons and Rajahs tread a worried, worried pace, fearful of the magic of the Buddha and of solar deities...

On the way to the execution ground, he stopped in front of a shrine, Young Rencho scolded the deity and said,

"The Great Bodhisattva Hachiman! Are you really a deity? You made a vow to the Buddha that you would protect the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra. Why do you not protect me?" For a moment, people watched, as if curious...what would happen?

"If you are afraid of me to tell the Buddha that you break your vow to the Buddha, you had better carry out your vow right away."

Because of the strong faith of the youthful monk, a miracle occurred in which a ball of fire, reminding some who watched of a piece of the very sun's heart, flew from the direction of Enoshima and caused the soldiers to fall on the ground."

As a result they could not carry out the execution.

After the attempted execution, Young Rencho expressed his devotion to his duty and his determination to give all that he could for the people of Japan.

he proclaimed that his false ego had been reduced, purifying his soul in the crucible of harsh trials.

What WAS the "ball of fire," round, like the moon, which rendered the attempt to kill the young Dharma practitioner pointless?

Was it Rencho's own magic? Who can say? Was it the intervention of Omikami Ameterasu, the solar deity?

Why did a ball of fire appear at the very time that Young Rencho was about to be sacrificed to appease the Shoguns and the priesthood?

this story features cute talking animals and at least one girl with a sword who lurks in the forests and uses foul, foul language.
Very funny!
