I'm guessing circulation = number of physical books printed + number of digital copies sold? And does not include reads through subscriptions (as opposed to purchases)?

I remember when the anime came out, the manga was sold out literally everywhere I looked. I ended up picking up the first six volumes during a RightStuf sale and was going to pick up the rest with CR's one day sale, but...sadly, Crunchyroll was sold out of literally every series I am currently following. Starting from the exact next two volumes I need to continue them. Sadness.

It used to be just how many copies had been printed. It was essentially how many could be owned at that point in time. I'm not sure how or if digital distribution has changed this.
