NegiMagica is not claiming that is an excuse for downloading. He/she only said that this is the reason they think people do download. In fact, the whole point of NegiMagica's post was to request that regardless of all this people stop downloading. |
I wasn't accusing NegiMagica of saying it's alright to download because DVDs are too expensive, I was saying it was ridiculous of them to say that DVD prices are high. Since they are not high, how can that be a reason people download? Even if anime was cheaper people would still download because it's free.

That's exactly what I was going to say, Zalis. There is a huge difference between an American show being released on DVD and an anime being released on DVD. With anime they've got the huge license fee and then all of their production costs on top of that (translating, subbing, acting, audio remastering and so on). With American TV series they made all of their production money back plus profit during broadcast and can afford low priced DVD releases which are really just a bonus for them. Anime thrives almost entirely on the DVD market, American TV series treat home releases as an extra.
There is nothing really similar to the anime market so it's perfectly reasonable to compare the past and present.

I would have to say that would be an exception, not a rule. More often than not, I would assume you'd find your anime available on DVD, sooner or later through eBay, specialty stores or larger, big box companies.
Can't expect one to cover every exception in a statement.

Another thing people tend to glaze over quickly is that the economy isn't in the greatest of shape right now, and there's trouble with asian economies as well. Smaller companies, which is what R1 licensors are, are really going to feel the pinch in such times. It's impossible, and entirely speculative, to determine how much of the negative effect on the anime industry is a result of which factors.

When it's all bootlegs (sometiems even hard to figure out what is a legit R2 release and whats crap), forget it. Fansubs are usually the only option. I'd be more than willing to pay for it, but unless they fork up the goods, i'm abit stuck.

I personally buy all my anime. I collect anime like some people collect DVD movies, i guess you can say it is my hobby (everyone needs at least one thing to collect and waste their money on, mine is anime). I obviously dont buy unless im sure or kinda sure i'll like it. I also dont download cause i like to watch the full episode on a TV and lay back, instead of see 10 mins clips on youtube on my small comp screen.
However, Nate is right, I would buy a lot more if they put more episodes on a dvd. Sometimes i see 3 episodes on a dvd, which really pisses me off. It especially pisses me off when they have like 4 DVDs with three episodes and the a 5th with 4 episodes, meaning they just could have made 4 dvds if they would have made em all with 4 episodes (ie - i hate when they do it simply to make more dvds to buy).
Whatever the case, i cant blame anyone for downloading them cause although I buy anime I do download ALL my music.

Same here. downloading anime is just too much of a hassle, and it really doesn't save that much money. DVD-R prices are actually pretty expensive, and the software required to do so costs major cash.
Also, I love your name. I am also a Grateful Dead fan.

But I'm not sure I agree that anime is cheaper now than it has ever been. Of course it is way cheaper than it used to be in the 90's. But I think anime was on average 20% cheaper about 2 or 3 years ago compared to now. The MSRP's haven't really changed as you said, but I've felt that the actual selling prices everywhere (both in real life stores and online stores) have gotten higher (closer to MSRP) this past year or so. This is just my feeling, I could be wrong.
I agree that a significant part of this may be due to a currently weakened economy, as several others have said.
Regarding anime figures and PVC toys (it's not the same as anime DVDs though) the MSRPs of everything have majorly shot up about 20% to 30% in the last few months. In the case of imports, the weakened dollar really hurts if you order PVC figures from places like Hobby Link Japan. If you get the "domestic" versions (usually through US distributor aaaanime.com) the MSRPs have gone through the roof to reflect this.

It might come out eventually. And then you won't want to pay 30$ for four episodes of a series you've already seen in whole...
I've bougght four Fullmetal Alchemist DVDs this weekend for about half price, and I've seen places where I can find DVDs for cheap, legally, like Negima or something. I think it's reasonable.

And let's not forget the part where you had to choose between Dub or Sub ONLY. Oh, and fansubs used to cost like $10 a tape or something because you had to reimburse the subber for blank videotapes and shipping. Memories ....
This is why I laugh at whiners who go Wah Wah Anime DVDs Are Expensive. Yeah, anything is expensive compared to FREE. Besides, anyone who knows how to bargain shop will never have to pay the "ZOMG $25 FOR A DVD" that the whiners are always whining about.

I quite agree with this and am proud to say I don't download anime, nor do I use bittorents (like so many of my friends).
I like to wait until the series comes to the states, and THEN I buy it. I HAVE seen a few bootlegs (friends bring them over wanting me to see them) and MOST unofficial anime has poor quality anyway!!!
The entire film of Paprika was on youtube two weeks before it came to theatres in the states, but I refused to watch it.
(Who wants to see a horribly pixilated 3 hour film anyway?)
I waited till it came to theatres, and am glad I did so. The animation was beautiful!
If nothing else, anime has taught me patience. "Good things come to those who wait." should be the national expression for otaku.
An anime too expensive? Wait for a few years, and you'll find it for sale someday.
Want to see a series? Be patient! It takes a bit of time.
I think people are just inpatient because everything is so fast.... internet, TV, news, cars, video games, graphics, ipods......
The list goes on and on.
...now all I have to do is wait for the next Nintendo system to come out so that I can get a Wii half off!

Wow, I feel like the lone sheep in a forest of wolves. I have still to pay a dime to the anime industry. Mind you I have never downloaded or redistributed anime, but I have been and will be a strong supporter of fansubbers and fansubs in general. If something is available for free I have no intention of paying for it, unless it becomes completely indispensable in my life.
Some of you might believe that the industry will die out if I don't buy a DVD, but the truth is it will still be around long after we are dead. The simple reason is that the medium has drawn millions of fans across the globe and the more it is exposed across international borders the more revenue it will generate for the industry regardless of how many illegal down loaders, bootleggers, or fansubbers there are.
