Googled it, and there's an island named this that's known for a tiny number of people and lots of cats. Google images just gives lots of pics of four girls, esp. one with long white-ish silver-ish hair, and a couple of pics with a crowd that includes a couple more young teen boys. Not much to go on.

A charming slice of life or two is always very welcome, sometimes you need a calm anime to wind down with.

I looked up a summary of the visual novel from The Visual Novel Database and the backstories of the girls he meets in the visual novel were described as, (1) a girl who's got selective amnesia and can't remember a vacation, (2) a girl looking for a pirate ship, (3) a girl researching old island legends for uncertain reasons, and (4) a vague description of a girl trying to find herself.

That doesn't guarantee that the anime will correspond directly to the video game novel, but the protagonist's name and the name of the island match the blurb on Crunchyroll.

This was pretty low key, and if someone had asked me which of the new anime I'd seen lately was based on a visual novel, I would have guessed this one immediately.

Fortunately, I'm a sucker for slow paced anime set on sunlit islands. This didn't enable me to watch the anime actually called "Island" all the way through (I thought it was muddled), but it did get me through Atelier Ryza and Okitsura in good standing, and neither of those anime were what I'd call high stakes, action oriented thrill fests. I was interested enough by the little hints of mystery, and I didn't find any of the characters irritating. The MC's melodramatic statements about being a wounded wanderer came close, but I couldn't tell if they were self-involved or self-mocking, so I wound up just watching to find out.

This anime didn't sweep me off my feet, but I wouldn't mind a glass of wine, maybe some dancing....

Episode 1

"Pretty low key..." Nice, heh-heh-heh... I'll try a bit more but this has all the hallmarks of a drop for me. Just not vibing on the vibe so far.

The first episode reminded me of why I avoid Key visual novels and the anime based on them. It always starts cheerful enough, you get to know the characters and then the girls end up dying or having some other miserable end one by one. I could be wrong but given that it is based on a work from Key plus the episode giving me flashbacks and a familiar feeling.....

That said, I would like to be wrong and if that is the case I will jump back in at the end of the season.

I have no idea what y'all are talking about, and not in the usual way where you're just not making any sense Wink I'm not a hundred percent sure, but I think the only visual novel game I ever played was Last Express (if that's even what that was). Or maybe Myst way back in the day, if it counts.

But I gather this Key company makes games that turn out to be tearjerkers? Or worse, tearlurkers, stories that pretend to be happy and then rip your heart out once you've invested?

Well that sucks. Maybe I'll put this anime on double secret probation too. (<--Animal House reference).

Myst I would call a puzzle-adventure, though point and click should fit too, great game btw.

But yeah, Key tend to often go for a lot of tragedy in their visual novels and by extention the anime based on them. Having sampled a few of them I found it to be a bit much and even cruel sometimes. That is just me though, many people love their work and maybe this one stays cheerful?

Ohhh, so I googled it and found out what you were talking about. I liked Clannad and Kanon and the first season of Rewrite though I know what you mean about the mopes. Never watched Air or Little Busters..

Not by Key, but did you enjoy Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April) and Purasutikku Memorīzu (Plastic Memories), or too many onion ninjas?

Clannad was good (but the choice of a Celtic name is weird and not explained). I tried to watch Kanon and had to drop it partway through the first episode - those vertically squashed faces creep me out.

Those I actually liked, it is the unique Key formula of basically every character/route coming to some miserable end that makes me not like them. It feels like tragedy farming even if there is always a true end that is less miserable.

Repeating myself from the preview thread, since I have nothing more to add.

Key joints aren't really my thing, and yet I find it hard to look away, no matter how much they annoy me. So even though this seems cut from the same cloth, using the same pattern to clothe its interchangeable protagonist-kun, I'll probably watch this too, grumbling at it all the way. And I'll keep a wad of tissues in my pocket, knowing full well I'll need them no matter how mad I get at the show for whatever stupid plot points it throws at me. Do not ask me why, there is no rational explanation for my behavior. I guess tragedy farming is my jam or something.

Episode 2

After seeing Ao Sorakado's buttocks only half covered in underwear, think this needs an ecchi tag.

My heart has been a little bit more won over, at least to the point of being willing to see more. I got a good chuckle out of the little kids calling him Lucifer over his dramatic fallen wings comment. I wonder what trauma our MC has gone through? I guess we'll find out at some point. This show is soaked in a summer atmosphere which is quite a welcome feeling for me as I emerge from yet another Canadian winter.
