Episode 1
Best I can say about Chika Suzugamori is that she is almost as likeable as Shima Rin - Hika Tsukishiro even sounds quite a bit like Nao Tōyama. Should be even more fun when we get some of the other characters involved (even the lush lady). Unless it falls off a cliff, this will be prime iyashikei, and I expect my main disappointment will be no announcement of a second season in the final episode. Since I am trying to fight personal ratings inflation, only gave it 4.5 Stars in the weekly poll (as usual, I am opposite the trend). |

I stopped watching the first episode halfway through, promising myself to watch it again because I couldn't tell if I was thinking about work because I was bored, or bored because I was thinking about work. Usually I like slice of life if it's done well, and I couldn't point to anything about this anime that was done badly. I dropped by this thread to see if anybody else had something to say.

Episode 1
I am not super into SoL titles these days, but if you are going to do one, making it a travelogue of Japan is not a bad way to snag me. Certainly like the look of this. Not sure I'll travel all the way with Chika, our struggling mangaka, but I'm not ready to ditch her yet, either. I don't get the ungrammatical "That's Journey"... is it supposed to be, "That's A Journey" or "Let's Journey"? Another Japanese to English mystery. |

It's a pun. "Zatsu" means careless/unconsidered, while "tabi" means journey. So the title can be directly translated to "Careless Journey" (referring to the protagonist going out with no plan and deciding what to do on the fly), but also "zatsu" is how you pronounce the English word "that's" when spelled out with romaji, so the title can also be read as "That's Tabi (Journey)". I guess a sort of slightly grammatically awkward "that's what traveling is like!" |

Interesting! Thank you very much for that, Darkmagick. I always appreciate when someone with knowledge of Japanese can illuminate something for a unilinguist like me.

I rather like the first episode. I am a sucker for slice of life and love anime tourism so the combination of the two is welcome. Seeing the frustrated Chika go on a travel to get the creative juices flowing and enjoying things like a hot spring, nice meals and a steep climb while enjoying nature makes for some welcome relaxation. It does not yet reach Yuru Camp levels of comf for me though and that is due to it being a solo journey for now. Add some travel companions and I will likely be a great time.

I was actually expecting more art/manga elements, but I'll gladly take the tourism aspect. I've always been curious at Japan's geography, as I know a lot of different places and locales exist, but have never bothered to look up maps myself. I feel this'll be a great showcase for a lot of the smaller, more intimate areas around the country. The artwork and backgrounds definitely jumped up in quality when she got to traveling. I am also gonna' take a guess that with Chika's friends being around, this will eventually turn into a CGDCT (cute girls doing cute things) kind of show.

So I went back and tried this anime again as promised, and I will say that it goes down better as the first anime on a Friday afternoon than on a Wednesday night after I've already watched four new anime, the last two out of a mild sense of obligation. I watched it all the way through and got to experience some good stuff - the scenic renderings of the tourist destination and the music in particular - that I missed the first time.
I'm still a bit puzzled about why I'm not connecting to this more as I'm a genuine slice of life fan. And I think it's because the plot is a bit of a nothing burger. No, I've liked slice of life anime where the plot was a nothing burger. This is more like a nothing biscuit. Or maybe a nothing hors d'oeuvre. I think maybe I wanted a little more background on why the main character wanted to be a manga artist so badly, or had more of a sense that she was really fatigued and burnt out and needing some spiritual rejuvenation. Maybe it's me, but I felt like I saw some scenes that paid lip service to that familiar plot, and then the show became an animated travel series where a narrator I haven't really connected to looked at a bunch of stuff. The fact that I'm not really a CGDCT fan might have something to do with it too, not unless there's a sci-fi or some other kind of edge to it. Girls Last Tour? Sure thing. Laid Back Camp? Never made it through the first season. Momentary Lily? Sure. Narenare Cheer For You? Nope. Anyway, the show wasn't torture or anything. It was alright, and maybe when I'm in a particularly nerve frazzled state sometime, I'll turn this anime on again. |

Isn't is a bit early to judge that? Not all shows do a 1st episode info dump.
HERESY! The only better thing than watching Rin and Nadeshiko have fun together is watching Rin, Nadeshiko, and Ayano have fun together (Season 3 suspension bridge trip). Someday I will binge watch Seasons 1 and 2 of Yuru CampΔ for the 4th time and the Yuru CampΔ Movie and Season 3 for the 3rd time. |

Yah, I've got shows like that...shows I love but that have gotten the "Meh" treatment when I express that. The things you have to grudgingly accept are that art is subjective, opinions are derived from an individual's experiences, and I'm right
Okay, so I thought I could slip one in there. (Opinions are derived from an individual's experiences...pfffft.) I will say though, that info dumping would just be another form of bad intro. |

Yeah, as of episode 2 I am in for the whole season. The episode made clear that while some journeys will be done solo by Chika she will be accompanied by one (or multiple) of her friends during others. That way you get the best of both worlds similar to Yuru Camp. The first half was more solo nature and landmark viewing along with conquering Oysters (I might try one someday). The second half was having fun with a friend and made for a welcome contrast.

Episode 3
Word to the wise: turn on safe search before looking up the "Bukkake Udon" that they eat and do not search just "Bukkake" (unless you are into that type of pr0n, of course). Should this get an ecchi tag since we see both cleavage and buttocks in the onsen scene? Definitely a keeper after 3 Episodes. |

Episode 4 was another fun journey and with it being a three people party it was lively. Both Rin and Fuyune have a one-track mind, I do hope that Rin is only that much of an alcoholic during vacations though. I also imagine that walking through Japanese tourist spots while drinking strong liquor in broad daylight is not done?

I’m hooked. I need to go back over the episodes and take notes for a prospective trip to Japan
