Stop-motion animation huh. When I think of stop-motion animation, the first thing I think of is any of Rankin-Bass's Christmas special (although if it should be classified as anime is another part of the debate given that the stop-motion animation studio that did Rankin-Bass's stop motion animation also did Nutcracker Fantasy, which by the way is classified as anime by all databases like MAL, Anilist, AniDB). Speaking of Nutcracker Fantasy, I'm surprised this wasn't brought up in the discussion.

But yeah, stop-motion animation is really kind of cool and unique in it's own way.

Not anything anime related, but when I think of stop action, I think of Tool's Sober.

C'mon guys. Svankmajer's Alice in Wonderland. The Brothers Quay. The wizard of speed and time.

At least you brought up The adventures of Mark Twain.

This Week in Anime isn't designed to be a comprehensive list of everything under a specific genre (especially that genre/trope outside of Japanese-produced works), just as last week's Witch column couldn't possibly namedrop every single witch-themed anime.

I used to get this when I wrote The List, and it was rather frustrating because it isn't conducive to conversation about the actual topic outside of "you didn't say the thing I know about."

So great to see Takena mentioned! Seen most of his videos, and I just love that stuff. Sure, don't expect a great story or the most refined effects, but for what it is it's just a lot of gloriously gory fun. It's a shame most of his videos rank very low on MAL, they deserve so much better! I always wonder what people expected going into those videos.....

Another (Japanese) Youtube stop-motion channel I love is Animist, no clay but figures, and it really shows the amount of work that's put into it.

And Pui Pui Molcar....the best anime of 2021!

It is rather curious there's no mention of Nutcracker Fantasy and its link to Rankin-Bass, especially since R-B is what many people think of when they think stop-motion. A strange oversight.

Glad to see another user like you mentioning that, I started to feel lonely on the thread that nobody has mentioned Rankin-Bass and Nutcracker Fantasy.

I just happened to pick up a few older DVD releases this year that have some Japanese stop motion titles on them. KimStim put out some compiled collections of the works of Kihachiro Kawamoto and Koji Yamamura over 15 years ago, and they're definitely worth a look for anyone interested in the medium.

Yamamura does a bunch of mixed media projects. Parts are traditional 2D animation techniques, parts are maquettes and sculptures photographed in 3D space with drawings interspersed, parts are swirls of paint and clay in unusual mediums like water, and some incorporate CG blending. Each short from his Yamamura Animation studio is wildly different, and many are easily available for free on their YouTube Channel.

Kawamoto did more traditional stop motion techniques with detailed dolls and miniatures over the course of several decades. The expressiveness of his animation is really interesting. I appreciate the small details in animation, and he paid attention to a lot of little things like animals twitching ears and clothing blowing in the wind. Here is a clip of some of his technique, for those interested and unaware of his work.

Oh, and not Japanese animation but... I just gotta give a shout out to Will Vinton. That guy sculpted some projects near and dear to my heart and my childhood. I still watch his Claymation Christmas special every holiday season. And yep, I do indeed have that Mark Twain movie of his as well. Very Happy

One of the more surreal things is the Moonshine Animations YT channel, where he’ll do stop-motion animations of Figma figures doing reviews of other Figma figures, like this one of Gawr Gura: https://youtu.be/1EY50aGH7r8

Oh boy, Mad God! Love it, but it's not for everyone. For anyone who wants to watch it, don't eat or drink during the movie maybe even before, you'll thank me later.

Sorry, I should have expressed myself with less snark.

If we’re going to talk about weird and creepy stop motion, Svankmajer and Bros Quay are really worth bringing up: assemblages of junk, debris, and grime make for a deep creepiness. Forumites, check those out!

I’ll grant you The Wizard of Speed and Time was maybe (sadly) obscure.

Pui Pui Molcar and Pokemon Concierge were both unexpected delights, and I'm so glad both got/get to show off even more of their extremely adorable craft! Steve really nailed the feeling of wanting to reach through the screen and pet all the fuzzy critters.

I'd always heard that stop-motion was a dying art, and that might still be true, but I'm glad people are still continuing to make it, and I hope the process only gets easier as technology advances. Stop-motion really does feel like a labor of love.

FYI for the opening streaming info, Pui Pui Molcar is not on Netflix outside of Asia anymore. Seems like it expired last month.
