Thanks for sharing this insightful and detailed account of actually achieving what the question was asking for first-hand. Loved Cannon Busters and still hoping for a continuation someday. With the 10-year anniversary of the anime happening in a few years there's a chance, who knows?

Interesting Answerman's article today. I think also you have to factor in animation studio around the world collaborating together with anime studio like for example Mamoru Hosoda's Belle had Cartoon Saloon involved in this and we have Studio Mir (the Korean animation studio involved with several well-known animation) working with Toei on a anime adaptation of a webtoon. We've already known since early 2010's that anime studio/companies had outsourced their animation to studio in other part of Asia, I don't have to remind you about Tokyo Override which for some reason is not classified as anime despite most of the staff is Japanese, and the original language is Japanese. Stuff like I said above is probably making anime studio becoming comfortable with making anime for international audiences and are willing to work with American and foreign producers and including foreign animation studio. I mean Polygon Picture has already partnered up with Titmouse animation studio. How long do you think until we see more western (along with other foreign) producers and creators will do more collaboration and working with Japanese animation studios (and that could extend to South Korean animation studio too).

Great article, Jerome! I think you've really hit the nail on the head about something that a lot of people misunderstand:
I always see fans saying: Wow, [insert name of studio here] is releasing a new anime this season! It's going to suck/be amazing because [studio]'s previous anime also sucked/were amazing! But that attitude completely misses the nuance that you have emphasised: That it's the talent, not the studio that matters. Since animation staff at almost all studios are work-for-hires and not full-time employees, consistency by the studio is never guaranteed. After Studio X releases an awesome anime in the spring with Director A, Screenwriter B, Character Designer C, and Art Director D, who is to say that that same Studio X will release another awesome anime in the autumn? Those fantastic staff have already left after their spring project, and the next staff that onboard in the autumn may not be as good. But that leads to another of your excellent points:
Studios want to work with people that they respect. People with talent, with creative visions, that are easy and fun to work with. Which is why so many staff are associated with certain studios and do return again and again to produce more works for those studios: Because it's not the studio that made the amazing anime, it's the creatives. I wish more people recognised this fact, and learned to recognise the names of the talent, not the studios. |

Let's Play is airing later this year, not next year. And I'd say that Bee and PuppyCat: Lazy in Space could count as well since it's created and written by westerners, and most of the other stuff is done by Japanese staff (in fact, Natasha and co. went to Japan to directly work on the show). Besides that, this is a great article! You never really hear about how this sort of stuff works, so it's great to learn about the processes and whatnot. |

I find it interesting how the author immediately starts insulting and making negative assumptions about people because they don't have a similar opinion to his. I'm sure he's the hero in his head but that's what it looks like on paper. Regarding anime, pepple have some good valid arguments but if you group it all together and call it gatekeeping, then sure that's a way to get pass different opinions.

I feel like there's a lot more than that. Especially given the 80s and 90s were full of American cartoons animated by companies like TMS but written in America like Batman The Animated Series or Tiny Toons. But for recent stuff shouldn't Scott Pilgrim Takes Off be included in that list as well? |

Batman: TAS and Tiny Toons had just as many episodes animated by South Korean studios, if not more in the case of the former. Not sure those count if the studio was just subcontracted, otherwise we’re getting into yet another “what IS anime???” debate, or claiming that, say, Otaku no Video and the 1998 Spriggan are part of the Studio Ghibli canon. Something like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off! absolutely would count since science SARU and Abel Góngora were big drivers behind it along with O’Malley and Grabinski. Cannon Busters was a manga-inspired comic before it was an anime too. |

To be fair Jerome does disclose he was the executive producer on Cannon Busters so it makes sense he would be take issue with the response to it and other series like it. I don't agree with him and would probably be considered one of those gatekeepers who do not consider these kinds of co-productions or outsourced series anime but it puts the anger in perspective. |
