I don't know if you guys are aware of this, but a boy has the right to dream.

Anyway, seeing you finish off with an AMV focused on Jinnai from El Hazard reminded me of Habba Habba Zoot Zoot, the nonsense classic from twenty-plus years ago. I dunno if the joke might be lost on folks who haven't seen the show, but I remember my friends and I turning it into a friend group meme in the earliest days of my anime fandom.

Great to see "Hall Om Mig" acknowledged; I've long thought that one's among the all-time-greats for anime AMVs.

A recent favorite involves clips from episode 7 of DAN DA DAN set to "Can't Help Falling in Love." It starts at the 40:56 mark of the video below (which includes nearly all of the AMVs at Anime Central that were voted on for awards). Fair warning that it's a heartbreaker rather than a "fun" one.

Like a lot of people, that Princess Tutu AMV was my first exposure to the series, and it's a big reason why I eventually checked it out. Really glad I did, too. Also much love for good ol' AMV Hell. The movie-length 3 was one of my go-to time-killer videos way back in the day, and a clip from 0 featuring a certain infamous use of corn is still a running gag among my group of friends.

Don't have the links handy at the moment (I'll edit them in later if I remember), but probably my favorite AMV ever is a FLCL one set to Weird Al's "Alternative Polka." The song is a perfect fit for FLCL's brand of insanity, and the editing and lyrics-matching are perfect. I've watched it so many times that now when I hear the actual songs, I think of Weird Al's version, and when I think of that I think of the video. Laughing Another classic is the fantastic Bebop/Trigun mash-up "Tainted Donuts," featuring Spike trying to cash in on Vash's massive bounty. And another shout-out to the Legend of Black Heaven video set to "Code Monkey" with its glorious mid-00s graphical edits.

The field of AMV's is pretty wide - e.g. doing 4K upscales of existing AMV's of full songs from anime such as this channel:

https://www.youtube.com/@-madamv3367

or this:

https://www.youtube.com/@サクヤ-c8e

...and plenty of one-off AMV's where a particular song and anime meant so much to someone that they just made a single AMV, such as:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CM_HFGbCm4o (Tales of Symphonia OVA).

I made two that I was super proud of and a couple of other ones that worked better as short-form concepts rather than actual AMVs.

One I remember loving but can't find on YouTube was DragonBall Z set to the Dueling Banjos from Deliverance.

Current favorite is this Bungo Stray Dogs AMV for it's use of incorporating the sound effects (spoilers for the first three seasons + movie)

I have loved AMVs for like 16 years and lazily categorize them into a few types. Summary of the show; Character focus; Uses music from a musical so something else's plot; Ship; Fight scenes; Comedy; Dance/Any movement to the beat/song, largely disregarding show context; Tearjerker/All the sad scenes; Just attractive scenes to an attractive song; Cool scenes that are basically relevant to the song.

And now some of my favorites selected to be crowd pleasers for this. To start, a Uses music from a musical with "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" featuring clips from non-anime, Avatar: The Last Airbender in which Ozai's Angels are the creepy kids and Aang is Sandy. A lot of fun and ancient editing and on point lipsyncing.

Flashy, sexy, and violent, falling under Cool scenes that are basically relevant to the song: Kizumonogatari set to Panic! At the Disco's "Don't Threaten Me with a Good Time."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3d0dC9ef8M

...my real favorites are like, Show summary of Sound of the Sky set to "Strangers" one of the insert songs from Wolf's Rain and dramatic and wordy Utena ship vids, also someone made a good Character focus one starring Oikura from Monogatari which brings us to the point of: What is the point of AMVs

It was surprising to me that the writers don't love them aggressively. For me, an AMV's reliable value that is returned to again and again and again is when you crave the feeling your favorite show elicits. You can gorge yourself on the moments, highlighted by appropriate music that heightens the moments further without having to actually pull up the scene of Oikura monologuing miserably which feels disrespectful.. And still can't watch too much; don't wanna clutch something so tight, you wrinkle it. Or suck all the feeling out. Though that does happen even so sometimes... then you must abstain from watching for a year or so.. Aside from that, for the Comedy/Fight/Dance/Cool shit types, they're just satisfying to behold like a well-made Kpop MV (Though I haven't seen a new one of those in like 8 years, maybe they're different now.) Every beat is designed to be a bite of visual and audio snack, pluuuus harkening to a story you love. 10/10 concept are AMVs.

edit:
IT'S ALSO, not just returning to feast on a desired feeling, but discovering new angles. These lyrics reveal something relevant you hadn't expected.. This perspective is one you hadn't focused on before... AMVs are another form of discussion- it's someone's take, someone's fanfic, someone's adoration and why. Then you adore it and that's fun. And not only randomly discovering but you can seek them out too.. I do this often... With The Executioner and Her Way of Life, I think Menou is hella cool but the show's fight scenes/music/sound effects aren't the best. So I went trawling for good AMVs to drool over instead. There were a ton and they all were made with mediocre music using the exact same clips and by one artist and I wonder if AI is taking over even this. And YT search function is so broken that finding new AMVs becomes next to impossible now after it gives you the four it wants to give you, welp..

While I appreciate the artistry in an actual well crafted AMV especially some with unique real art like the Chainsaw Man manga one in the article, I definitely prefer the funnier ones like these to Dungeon Meshi

But since you guys posted the one classic Toonami one that everybody knows, I figure I should link the parody/tribute to it they made after Space Dandy wrapped up that's entirely dedicated to that show (it's been deleted off their main channel but nothing's ever truly gone on the internet...)

Happy to see you address the subsection of anime fandom that's closest to my heart. It was AMVs that turned me from a casual anime fan into a total weeb, specifically AMV Hell 3, way back in 2006. I've since made dozens of AMVs, contributed to every subsequent AMV Hell project, and volunteered in the AMV rooms of several cons.

Some may say that the heyday of AMVs is in the past, but judging from the crowds they still draw at cons, it looks like they're not going away anytime soon.

One of the greats.

Chris's Bluesky post last week made me do some cleanup of my old AMV collection, which mostly stems from the pre-youtube period when we had to go through some extra effort to find them.

We definitely favored the more comedic entries in my circle, but the ones that conveyed whole narratives, like this Macross Plus/Cake sendup were the ones that stuck with me over the years:

I've always enjoyed this Super Cuts of all anime openings. Some of the tropes I was already aware of, but some just made me laugh out loud at how common they were and I'd somehow never noticed.

Also, every October I have to revisit Soul Eater/This is Halloween. It's a masterpiece, and frankly more unsettling than just watching the series.

Way back in the 90s, I saw an AMV of Shadow Skill set to Republica's Rady to Go. I've been looking for it for a few years, but I can't find it online.
