It's still just so funny how transparently this is the result of grifters getting the rights to something that was mildly successful close to a decade and a half ago and desperately trying to make it into a big franchise (while involving none of the people who actually made it in the first place)

A sequel AND an anime tells me they're really banking on this IP which which I'm more than glad to see happening. The original game was really fun and I enjoyed it. Maybe they saw the success of recent games like Stellar Blade and quickly looked for other 'hot girl action games' IPs to capitalize on. I hope it turns out well. I wonder who they'll get to animated the anime..

I mean who in the world wants a sequel without Suda/Grasshopper and James Gunn?
Vow to avoid DEI as a selling point is also a huge red flag. It feels like the people who own the IP now don't understand what made it appealing in the first place. |

Wow, went from kind of excited to not at all in one PR letter. Was it at all necessary to include the DEI sentence? Don't really need the insight into their hiring practices.

I don't think they mean hiring process but more the content of the game. I imagine with how badly perceived modern sequels to older IPs are they felt the need to state they wouldn't mess anything up for the sake of being politically correct. I'm going to assume they mean the kind of stuff like what CAPCOM did with the modern day Resident Evil remakes where they gave Jill, Ashley, and Ada pants and removed any dialog, outfits, or scenes that could be deemed as sexual or problematic in the modern era. Juliet's various outfits from her default cheerleader one the seashell micro bikini are obvious enough to be removed for the sake of modern sensibilities but also a lot of the dialog would probably be considered offensive or rude today. Jokes about being disabled, gay, roofies and date rape, pedophilia, Juliet being groomed by her teachers, etc. Lollipop Chainsaw felt like one of the last entries in the 2000s American teen movie frat boy era brand of pop culture. It'll be interesting to see if they can replicate all that. |

The James Gunn in 2025 is not the same person James Gunn was in 2012. I seriously doubt he would stand by most of the content in Lollipop Chainsaw these days if only because of the PR fallout it would cause him now that he's the big Marvel/DC director guy and wants to be seen as family friendly and non controversial as possible. Even back when he was working on Guardians of the Galaxy he had to scrub old blog posts that had similar kind of humor as Lollipop Chainsaw. Would he really stand by Juliet's dad calling Nick a fruit and thinking he's gay in 2025 when he got in such trouble for calling Gambit a cajun fruit 13 years ago? Absolutely not. I'd be curious to know what you think made Lollipop Chainsaw appealing in the first place because I don't think it has anything to do with "DEI". That wasn't a term people used back when the game originally came out. |

Is there any particular reason why now of all times Lolipop chainsaw is getting all this?
I mean the game first came out over a decade and than had become just a cult classic but now it is like it is recieving a whole revival. did the remaster really change things that much or something else? |

That just seems to be how most nostalgia-bait sequels come across nowadays, to be honest. |

When you can't come up with anything novel or new, you dust of something that was successful. They probably saw how well Atlus was doing with all their reboots and wanted to throw their hat into the ring. |

This is a game I never thought would get a sequel or see again, let alone as an anime announcement as well. I'm glad it is though and I hope it turns out well. It sounds like they are committed to having it as much like the original as they can. I wonder if it'll be just as much of a licensing nightmare with all the copyrighted music and costumes as the original game was or go the safe route and do more original music.

Man, Gunn and Suda never stood for this anti-woke grift nonsense, and it’s sucks to see their old project taken over by those kinda people.

This is being handled by the same studio that did the remaster so I would assume yes. The remaster must have done quite well for them to consider doing a sequel and anime.
I don't know if you're just too young to not have been around back then or have simply just forgotten but Lollipop Chainsaw was incredibly controversial back in the day. When the game came out the game was labeled as sexist and objectifying and already fighting an uphill time in the industry at the time. Juliet was routinely cited as one of the worst examples of objectification in gaming by every major gaming outlet, by GDC panels focusing on women in gaming. Jessica Nigri being hired to cosplay and promote the game at conventions and being kicked out of PAX was what helped fuel the industry wide ban of booth babes at gaming conventions in general. |

The original was intentional shlock for sure. But it was a collaboration between Suda51 and James Gunn. So this statement is likely meant to assure "fans" of the original that as those two are not involved in these future projects, it presumably won't be "woke" like their recent work? Because nerds are mad about Superman being nice and Travis Touchdown having a "fudge racism" shirt. It feels like the new IP holders think the first game was only popular because of the fanservice. However the wacky writing played a big part, the game was basically a send-up to that old school 80s B-movie shtick. |

They did the same grift during the marketing for the remaster/port/whatever too, constantly telling the fans that they aren't gonna let anyone censor the game (nobody was trying to censor the game). This despite the fact that the remaster is missing most of the licensed soundtrack, meaning it literally is "censored" by copyright law, but, yknow. In this press release they also emphasize that the game was beloved for "dark humor" and "gore", which, um, I wouldn't call a zombie yelling "BUTT F*CK" for no reason dark, per se...
It's so transparently a scam that I'd be pretty surprised if any of these supposed sequels actually release. |

I never picked up the remaster since I have the original and also they had to remove all the licensed music anyway which sucks but I'm sure there's methods to remedy that for PC players. I'm glad to hear it did well enough to get a sequel though! Usually when companies tell you to support remasters and collections if you want a new game it's all hot air and never amounts to anything.
Also can we please not do the historical revisionism thing again like people tried to do with Bayonetta when they got upset at the ending to 3? Like, I get certain people are upset to see more creators speaking out against things like "DEI" but you're gonna have a hard time trying to re-frame the way the industry reacted to Lollipop Chainsaw back in the day. |
