Apparently, this thread was never migrated from Anime. But I found it, added it to the Index, and edited the opener. I also admit I've never seen this show, even after the rave reviews for it. I do like me some Gainax/Trigger, so I guess I should finally watch this 15 years later.

Season 2, Episode 2

I don't know what to think about having gotten into Magic the Gathering in the last few years, and the second episode of Panty & Stocking New was around parodying Magic the Gathering, including a parody of Black Lotus (Black Dildotus) and joking about the cards being ridiculously expensive and unreliable in value.

The new season is releasing on Prime, so I am able to watch it.

In general, 15 years is a long time, with a different landscape of entertainment and to come across as edgy as it was before.

S2, 1–2:

WE BACK... OMFG WE SO BACK...

AFTER FIFTEEN F**KING YEARS.

Am I dreaming? Is this a fever dream? I thought Grand Blue's return felt like ages; this one felt like a whole era ago. I mean, fifteen years! You know how much my life has changed over fifteen years since the previous season? I didn't even need a quick recap; I actually remembered everything that happened before! The profanities, the parodies, the rapid-fire delivery on steroids. Nothing about this show has changed. It left and came back as if it were just yesterday.

What is going on this Summer of 2025?? Is this the best summer in a very long time? It might just be (and I haven't even watched Takopi's Original Sin yet). Not gonna forget this summer at all, this season is wild!

F*ck & Furious got me real good. Like, real good.

New PSG is going all in and I love it. Wouldn't like it if they are pulling punches.

I know that season 2 is supposed to introduce a pair of angel brothers. I was wondering how the show might decide to introduce them, and then the F*ck & Furious episode ended the way it did and has me questioning if it could go there. Or it was a once off joke that means nothing.

As hilarious as that would be, I think it's just meant to be a reference to Furious 7 and nothing more significant beyond that.

Episode 3: In the midst of the Fast and Furious sex parody they managed to squeeze in a yell of "Initial G".

Episode 4: Meta on the Meta on the Meta

Started out as a parody of old Saturday morning cartoons and them somehow turned into layer upon layer of Fourth World references. So much to unpack you could probably make a two hour long YouTube video just listing all the references.

NO FUGGIN' WAY.

First two segments are fine, but that third one? WHERE DID THAT COME FROM. So let me get this straight: not only does PSG parodize Western media, but it also imitates 1960s cartoons and animates FF4 comics!? When the FF4: First Steps are showing in theatres right now? It actually follows trending stuff!?

No shot, this show's breaking the fourth wall's fourth wall. This is 4D chess-type stuff.

Why is it always the third act that is different from the rest.

I like it. A meta story about B-grade horror flicks and typecasting. Who would have expected something with a bit of substance in a completely mindless show like this? It's refreshing.

I am particularly reminded of codified the horror cast trope: the Whore, the Fool, the Athlete, the Scholar and the Virgin (Final girl). And really having watched enough analysis of horror tropes where slashers can tend to have a dehumanising element of putting women into boxes of being pure or impure. There can be a whole sort of hypocritical element that such characters are both exploited for their sexuality in the film, but also punished for it.

It had me a little worried as this series isn't exactly innocent from exploiting and possibly shaming Panty. The added violence could feel a bit gross, but I guess they revealed the opening one was a movie.

Oh no, Angel Brothers!
AND THEY'RE K-POP BOY BAND MEMBERS!

Speaking of K-pop, it might be a stretch but... did this show just parodize KPop Demon Hunters? Like for real?? Because if it did... man, talk about topical material! But think about it: if this show makes fun of every medium, then why not K-pop too? It's only a matter of time before that happens. You knew it was going to happen.

An amazing episode, which I expected no less. Of course, it had to give itself the entire episode's length just for the Angel Brothers.

Fun fact: the Angel Brothers are introduced in this season of episode 6. Guess when the Devil Sisters were first introduced in the first season? Yep, episode 6. That's an Easter egg.

Regardless of K-pop or not, at least in English the boys used a lot of gen Z slang, with the insults used against Panty and Stocking I think positioning them as Millennials. Again, at least an English track reference had Panty making a Charlie the Unicorn reference, mentioning "Candy Mountain" with the demon sisters turned unicorn.

The episode was super fun in its elements of chaos and stuff. Also introducing a top tier character of "Gunsmith Bitch". Elements of the character make me think back on Space Patrol Luluco, which was the series of Studio Trigger at its most Trigger.

Oh no, it has happened.

Gonna be a wet blanket: this is the first time in this season when I went "huh... this episode felt normal, for once". And weirdly enough, it's not a good thing. This happened in the first season too: it started with a bang, then somewhere in the middle of the series, it dipped. Fizzled. The profanities are still there, but something's missing and you know it. The same thing has happened this season too.

But guess what: things picked back up again toward the end of last season, where everything ended with a bang. Can we hope for the same pattern again this season? I surely hope so, if history indeed repeats itself.

I liked the new episode well enough, but I feel that it was a missed opportunity to not show the gremlin that's "piloting" Chuck this episode. He gets a whole episode back in the original show!
But it *has* been quite a while since the original, so I'm not going to go continuity police on the show.
