So is this a revival (or reboot) of the Toei's Metal Hero series? Because if that's the reason for Super Sentai's retirement, then I'm not sure if this is the best idea from Toei.
Reminder: Toei retired Metal Hero in 1998 with Robostack, and we haven't had a Metal Hero show until the announcement of Gavan Infinity. |

With the premise of "red-themed heroes in various stories" and that Toei is "open to crossover appearances in each others' shows", I wonder how long it'll be before they trot out Captain Marvelous

The old tokusatsu series is dead, long live tokusatsu

Considering Marvelous was saved by Gavan as a kid, that would make complete sense to include him and tie back into the lore. |

The concept being Project RED feels like it's intentionally very vague, allowing Toei to do a wider variety of Toku shows from season to season. Given that every Super Sentai show has a red hero as team leader, that might include more sentai teams down the road, but perhaps they feel like they don't want to only do that style of series year after year.
The fact that they're starting with an established character like Gavan makes me wonder if every series in this franchise will be a sequel or reboot, or if we'll be getting original characters as well. |

I'm still not sure how to feel about the end of Sentai but I'm interested to see how this turns out and if Toei will stream it internationally like with Zeztz.

I feel like going for Gavan is a test-run of sorts, since Gavan is a known property and can be used for a proof-of-concept. They don't have to reinvent a whole new setting or characters, they can build off of what's been done already, while prepping for possible brand-new characters later on down the line. Some buddies of mine on Discord put it a very good way: the general Sentai set-up was ultimately very limiting, and there is only so much that can be done within the confines of a five-person team with a unified aesthetic, especially since designs, color schemes, gimmicks, and themes can't overlap too much. (For example, Ninninger and Shinkenger effectively had the same concept for their weapons, being swords that involved a spinning doohickey.) The costumes also have to be designed a certain way to maintain the "Sentai" look; the Kingohger suits are unique in how they look like suits of armor, but they still had to be detailed to look smooth like a typical Sentai suit--on top of demands for the suits to be easy to move around in, replicate or repair. And that's before you get into the restrictions for the toys/weapons/transformation devices/robots/combiners. Now that they can branch out into other aesthetics, like the metallic Space Sheriff suits or, for example, the organic monster-like Akumaizer 3 suits, they have far more wiggle room in terms of designs--especially since they're not hampered by specifically needing a five-person team anymore. All that, and Toei is now free as dishwater to market, promote and release Project R.E.D. in global markets without having to worry about prior contracts restricting things (especially if rights holders are only going to squat on the contract and not really adapt anything). This also means Project R.E.D. is free to explore weird concepts/themes that would be considered too "foreign" for American audiences, a la Donbrothers going for the extremely Japanese legend of Momotaro for its themeing. They don't have to restrict themselves to doing dinosaurs a billion times.
Toei is leaving way too much money on the table by not doing so, and on some level they have to know it. Zeztz's reception alone has been a long time coming and as far as I can tell, it's been going great for them. Plus, Tsuburaya has been absolutely lapping Toei with how hard they've been pushing Ultraman--people can not only actually watch Ultraman on Youtube, simuldubbed, for free, but get pretty much any season from the franchise on Amazon. That's with other stuff like the Netflix movie, the card game, and the official Marvel comic spin-offs being available in the US. Part of why they haven't done that with Sentai is because whoever has the Power Rangers license effectively has the last word on how anything Sentai-related in the US is handled, in perpetuity (hence my earlier statement), and Hasbro has shown no interest in anything that isn't rehashing Mighty Morphin'. |

If there's any in-show crossovers with Super Sentai characters planned like some here are hoping with Captain Marvelous then this presents a problem because Hasbro's hold has led to even crossovers getting blocked. See Sato Company in Brazil, they tried to license the Space Squad movies and were denied because that had not just Gavan but also Dekaranger. |

There's a chance that Toei was planning this for awhile, since Gavan had some appearances in the 2010s starting with the Gavan/Gokaiger crossover film, but I doubt it. |

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about the crossover film, thanks for reminding me of that. |

Kinda sad to see the rebranding assumption/theory is pretty much dead at this point. But as already mentioned, the concept behind this new brand seems vague enough that a sentai-like series could still come out from it. Too soon to tell though at this point.
But man, totally regret not going to the 50th Anniversary exhibit when I had the chance. I happened to be in Japan when it opened in Nagoya, but I was in Tokyo and didn't want to travel there and back just for the exhibit. But had I known the series was ending, I definitely would've made time and paid the shinkansen trips just for it. |

I'm surprised that Toei decided to use Gavan as way of replacing the Super Sentai series, but that kind of reminds me that there's been a Brazilian movie adaptation of Kyojuu Tokusou Juspion movie in the works for quite some time, since Juspion/Jaspion was dubbed into Brazilian Portuguese in the '80s and it became a huge hit, but there hasn't been any updates on the project for quite some time
I wonder if Toei is planning in reviving the Metal Heroes series |
