This column is always a great read, I will need to check out your other one for sure. Thanks for a cool interview as well. The art for that game really sells the coziness and imagination.

I'm less worried about acquisitions when IPs aren't involved. When companies buy out companies specifically because they have attractive IPs you can bet that they don't understand exactly what made it special and very likely sent to cheap out or be too controlling on production in a way that will mess up the series unless the company really trusts the studio heads to keep doing what they're doing. That and while Nintendo did lay off Q&A contractors, they don't tend to do massive develop layoffs, so they aren't in danger of that as much as if someone else acquied them. So while I hate corporate chess games this one seems pretty safe.

-Nintendo: From what I understand Nintendo does acquisitions only if they feel the team can bring something to Nintendo's stable. Plus I believe Bamco is doing some downsizing so Nintendo just bought the team for relatively cheap.

-Fonts: Y'know, the fact Japan was basically locked out of most HD development because companies didn't want to make language tools for Japanese devs explains so much of the seventh gen.

Unfortunately, it's quite high-and-dry if you want to play any Medabots games; the recent collections haven't been released in the U.S., and there don't seem to be any plans for bringing them over.

Last night, a (different) Medabots mobile game was confirmed for an English release next year.

That font story is absolutely disgusting. But I feel confident it's just gonna cost them a lot of customers and a competitor will fill the gap sooner than later.

From what I've seen, a lot of die-hard SMT fans actually don't like Demikids; a pity, that!

I would hope that apathy would be due to the obligatory “changes” these games went through when they got localized. Which is funny since Jack Bros. which had the same problems doesn’t get shit over it.

Which would make me think the complaints are over things lol the kiddification of the games which would make no sense either being the games even in their original states are dark. Not dark like the books these games are a distant relative to but still very.

Jack Bros. is a really good point, but I'd hazard it gets a pass because nobody really plays Jack Bros. Laughing

From what I remember, there was very little bowdlerization going on in Demikids. Ignoring the sub-plot about the side-character and her partner getting formally executed (which, yes, was still in the English version!), a bunch of Demons were, if anything, more explicit than their mainline SMT counterparts. Incubus was completely unchanged (yes, he even had his "horn"), and Succubus was entirely naked, save for a smidge of body paint serving as pasties and a c-string. She's got some of the most extreme side-boob on the GBA! The extent of the changes in localization would be that Makai was renamed "Dem." I was in High School when I played Demikids, but I was still a bit shocked that Lucifer was still "Lucifer" and not any other kind of name that would've softened the blow.

Also, for what it's worth, I think some of the Demikids designs are a bit cooler than the mainline SMT designs; Oni in particular stands out as an improvement. (Also, now that I look, Demikids in English localized him as "Ogre" instead of "Oni," but like... that's hardly a huge leap as far as a translation would go.)

This was also the era where a lot of American Gundam fans really paraded how much they hated SD Gundam on Toonami, for what it's worth Rolling Eyes

Damn I wasn’t fond of SD Gundam myself but I didn’t know people hated it that bad.
