There's also a new Robot Master design contest.
The official Twitter account is outright calling this the "12th entry", which is interesting considering the name - I wonder if it's an acknowledgement of the deep numbers in the titles being intimidating to new buyers, or more to do with justifying gameplay changes. It looks pretty traditional so far, anyway. |

I hope the new Mega Man game gets both English and Japanese voice acting.

I don't know why that would be a concern - I'm pretty sure they did that for 11. Anyway, it's a shame that they're only accepting submissions for the Robot Master contest sent through Twitter, but at least the rules make sure that no GenAI is allowed. |

This was probably the biggest monkey's paw of an announcement I've seen in a while - MM11 was fine but it really feels like they're phoning these in, specifically because to accommodate for something a bit more narratively heavy (Legends) or mechanically deep (X/Z) they'd have to put a heavier investment into dev time.
The footage they showed was rough. Mighty No.9 gets a lot of flack for how it turned out and yes, it still does feel a bit too barebones today for all of the support it was given, but it's at least something I can fire up now & again if I want something different. Batterystaple Games has done such an amazing job of evolving the Mega Man platforming genre with their two titles, I really wish Capcom would suck it up and try to copy them and give us something that isn't just a copy/paste of MM8 for the umpteenth time. |

First game under the new producer (not counting the Star Force Collection) since the last guy left after Street Fighter 6's release two years ago.
11 was okay except the extra "Challenges" were boring, most of the main soundtrack was weak (not counting the pre-order DLC which was decent) and the lack of bonus characters ala 9 & 10 with Protoman & Bass. If the music in that trailer is from one of the stages then it's a good sign for the soundtrack at least but I'm sure the game itself will be fun and it'll be interesting to see how Protoman will be handled if playable since I wasn't a fan of his gameplay in 9 & 10 but then I hated how they downgraded Mega Man to play like he was in 1 & 2 minus the slippery feet. |

There, you can stop crying Mega Man fans, you'll get a game for the fortieth anniversary. Looks pretty cool

From what I see it seems the general consensus is that MM11 is mid? I liked it a lot! I guess I’m kind of basic. As long as I get a solid reason to revisit a series I’ve loved, since I got my MM3 cart back in the day I’m a happy camper!
But I COULD NOT agree more with you about the soundtrack for MM11. Was highly disappointed when it came out. I even tried to listen to it a few weeks ago and it just didn’t do it for me lol. Hopefully they rectify this as the music has always been such a highlight for me… |

MM11 wasn't amazing (and they shouldn't take 9 years to follow up on it), but it at least tried to advance the Classic series forward with new gameplay additions and didn't pretend the series stopped after 1988 like MM9 and 10 |

It's one of the best-reviewed games in the classic series and is objectively the best-selling game in the whole series. There are some vocal classic fans who didn't like it, but they're the minority. Personally I thought it was really good; my only major complaint is that Wily's castle was pretty short. It's a bit light on content compared to a lot of the classic games. What's there is very good, though. |

It's the mechanical depth that's my main concern. MM11 was probably the most-playable that the "classic" MegaMan series has ever been. It's not a bad game at all and is the only older/slower MegaMan game I've been able to enjoy. I wouldn't have ever bothered to touch it for more than 5 minutes if they had used the NES sprites again. I've royally had an extreme distaste for NES MegaMan for decades, largely due to the fact that it feels (having owned an Atari 2600 when it was in relevance) like a version of Pitfall, but one where you have a gun. Running, positioning, timing.... all elements both games share, and then MM1 throws in the gun and makes the jumps and the timing tighter with disappearing blocks and tiny hitboxes you need to land with precision - not dissimilar to the little crocodile heads in Pitfall. For me, it feels way too limiting and I cannot stand it. It's the difference between MegaMan X1 BEFORE you grab the dash boots, and MMX1 AFTER you grab the dash boots - it's such a significant change in how you navigate/interact with the game (setting aside climbing walls), that Capcom started most future MMX/Zero titles with the dash boots already a standard part of your kit. I know MegaMan can spring and slide in later "classic" titles, and MM11 did a good job making the sliding and the Gear system feel very smooth, but if we jump to the level of speed and depth/complexity the MM Zero series started demanding, "classic" MegaMan starts looking eerily similar to Mighty No.9 (which I do actually enjoy) with simpler block-shaped level designs that aren't as complex to navigate (cant climb walls), and bosses that cannot ever be too complex because they cant move at the speed an MMX boss is allowed to. Mind you, I'm blathering this as someone that can pick apart MMX1 in around 30/40min consistently, but the new game announcement is like someone saying "Hey! I brought you a pizza!" Awesome! I really like pizza! What's on it? "Oh, it's just a plain single-slice!" Oh. Okay.... well, I still like pizza.... thanks for thinking of me too I guess? Take a look at Batterystaple Games' trailer for 30XX and tell me, as jam-packed with features, and as amazing the art style looks, that Capcom isn't phoning it in when an indie dev is running circles around them. MegaMan could be everything this is and more, and instead he's going to move at the pace of a snail, barely-crossing small gaps if you don't run him to the pixel-edge of the block he's standing on. Yuck. Capcom needs to meet or beat what Batterystaple made if I'm going to stop being sour on them. YES the entire soundtrack is that good, the PS1-era art is awesome, and you can play it in a traditional MMX boss-level format, or as a rouguelite. Online co-op, community-made levels, weekly score challenges, "this or that gun-only" modes.... And then Capcom announces what will likely be the same game MM11 was more or less. I'll check it out when it hits $5, but you're going to have to pry my cold dead heads off of Delta and his 3-shots boost his sword/3-swords boost his shot gameplay to change my mind. |

I'm just curious to see a price. No matter how good it is, an $80 Mega Man game is gonna be a hard sell. Especially if it's just the length of an average MM game. It's definitely gonna need some bonuses or some extra mojo. From the whistle in the trailer I'm sure it will at least have a Proto Man mode.

^11 launched at $30 when almost everything else was $60. I don't see them pricing this anywhere close to $80 unless it's some useless Limited Run Games CE which would cost more that that.

11 is the kind of game that for sure works once - when people haven't had a Mega Man game in a long time, a pretty faithful modern looking update with only moderate iteration appeals well. It doesn't violate what people expect from Mega Man. "Oh, they still get it".
Doing that again with a Mega Man 12 is a tougher sell, and I've long thought that's probably been the issue. It's why I'm speculating the name change may be an indicator of them trying to doink around with the formula more than usual. Or not: it'll be out after a slightly longer time than 11 was from 10, afterall...but since they talk about making Mega Man a core IP again, I'd think they'd probably not want to run into the same problem, assuming they see it that way. |
