I'm not a big fan of shows about haunted little kids, so this one's going to be a tough sell for me.

Episode 1

I liked the first episode. I was uncomfortable for a good chunk of it because I didn't like the fact that Kaya-chan was being misunderstood, but by the end one of the teachers and a student "get it" so I don't have to worry about her being isolated by the entire community. I'm sure she'll pick up more admirers as the show goes on. Only in anime will you get a show about a kindergarten student fighting ghosts. Laughing

She's at a branch point where she either grows up to be Mieruko-chan or Dark Gathering

Hopefully Mob Psycho isn't out of the question either. That dark haired dude in the preview looked like he might be some kind of psychic or exorcist or con-man come a callin'.

This was more fun than I thought it would be. I don't know if I'll watch it all the way through, especially with Sundays so stacked. This season - which is pretty full to bursting - still has the lightest Saturday I've ever seen but the most loaded Sunday. But I'll give it another shot.

I really liked the first episode. In some ways it is the very opposite of Mieruko-chan in that Kaya has the power to defeat the ghosts (most of them anyway) but lacks understanding due to being a child. Mieruko understood her situation better yet could only pretend to not see all the horrible abominations. The ghosts in Kaya-chan are less graphic by comparison but given that it is a show regarding children that is likely for the best.

I appreciate that the children in the show actually behave like children. In many other anime the children understand situations as if they were small adults. The first segment is a great example in that Kaya defeats the ghost with a noose around its neck but is not able to link that to the person staring out the window. The rest of the episode showed that Kaya can be fooled by a ghost.

As for Osamu... he could not be more sus if he tried.

I gotta say... this show is not leery of going into some pretty dark territory. I love how it was clear that Kaya-chan and her little kindergarten friend saw a corpse hanging, without the show coming right out and saying it. Then the idea of a child being "spirited away" by a ghost masquerading as a parent is legit terrifying. Dayum. Anyway between Chie-sensei being able to take care of physical threats and Kaya-chan being able to take of ghostly ones, they are pretty well covered.

I had a couple of issues with this ep. Why did no one believe Chie about Osamu? Why wouldn't they call the police, like from the park? And how did Dad and Chie miss seeing Kaya walk right past them when they were looking for her? She saw her father, and he wasn't looking off in another direction when she did.

I have to wonder what happens to the kids during the time they're kamikakushied. They don't seem to have been harmed in any way. I thought part of the lore of kamikakushi was that if people return, they're not quite "right."

And I think Osamu isn't just misunderstood - that boy ain't right.

Episode 3

We know that Kaya-chan can see ghosts but what isn't clear yet is if she attracts them. If she doesn't, then dayum, her preschool is a veritable den of spirits. I like the story-telling chops of this title. Yes, it is episodic, but there are also ongoing interesting storylines... especially regarding Kaya-chan's mother. Osamu's backstory was sad but you can understand why he is so grateful to Kaya-chan. Too bad everybody assumes he's a lolicon. Kaya-chan made another friend at school so that's cool and we definitely haven't seen the last of Mel-sensei.

The show is actually a fair bit darker than Mieruko-chan. The latter has plenty of monstrous spectres in it but things usually end well. In Kaya half the segments (thus far) are pretty darn dark. With the first bit it seems like the real Mel-sensei might be trapped in the mirror screaming for help. The second bit ended well but the information about children silently drowning is chilling. Osamu's past is indeed sad but it might lead to Kaya getting help in dealing with whatever is in her house.

As for the number of ghosts, I think there are just that many of them in general.

Color me surprised and impressed with episode 4. The first segment was another solid case but what came after was something else. The puppet bit was downright unsettling and when Nacchi pulled out her tooth and starting cackling I got goosebumps. The final bit was creepy and interesting in that the mother is not simply being possessed, her baby is or maybe the baby is not even human to begin with.

Ep 4: Kaya: "I hate babies" - sounded like foreshadowing, and then they just went there in the next segment. How is this going to be solved? Although I guess there will be a good ending here (if not, this is pretty dark), I think we haven't yet been introduced to the ways to bring that to happen. Anyway, this is overall properly spooky.
