Just based on the synopsis I thought this might be going for a Duke of Death and His Maid vibe, but while not completely different (the main character is an innocent whose magical nature has isolated her), this anime has its own vibe going on.
It is very sedately paced and told in the fashion of a fairy tale, which has its good and its bad points. The various strange mushroom effects and animal spirit avatars and weird magic hat transformations are cool, and so are some of the ideas, like magic pictures that drain the soul of the person drawn (a lot of tribal cultures believe that). On the other hand, the narration has a sing song quality that never shows strong emotion or a change in pace, and that can get old after a bit, especially when there's not much overt action. The visuals are pretty but the animation is nothing special. It's more like the animated pages of a French fairy tale than a typical anime, which again, has its good and bad points. I liked it, but the plot is going to have to keep churning to keep me from getting bored with the narrative style. |

Episodes 1-2
This is the first show of the new season that has really grabbed me, albeit with reservations. My reservations stem from the fact that I like Luna so much that every instance of her social isolation was like a dagger in my heart. I love the look of the show. This title would have to poop the bed pretty majorly for me to abandon it. |

I only watched Episode 01, so far, but thought it was pretty great. The fact that there's a narrator makes the whole thing feel like a sad fairy tale. And yes, the art is stellar. Some tragic circumstances for Luna to start. Hopefully, she's not so lonely for too long.

My minor complaints are:
- Want to see more of the giant white cat - Merino and Sisi looks like small humanoids wearing animal costumes - Minos's voice could be less squeaky Nothing important enough to stop it from being a keeper. Minos must have really sensitive skin to find merino wool scratchy (I am wearing merino wool socks as I type this). |

This might be the best anime of the season, at least as far as new anime is concerned. Overall we will see about Frieren might the only one that can compete and that is a season 2.
The rules of this universe does fascinate me, when I think they are going for one thing, they go in a whole different direction, for example the talking animals, when she turned one of them into a normal bull, I thought he would just be a normal bull, but nope he is still talking, than I think when they get into town, he is going to shut up and act like a normal bull, nope he is still talking. Keep me on my toes. I have a theory on the narrator / boy, I think she is Luna and that guy's child, giving what I have seen so far with the way spells work, why not. So far we have only seen black witches and associates, and they all have dark hair. I wonder when we meet some white witches, will they white or silver hair. |

Episode 3
Well, our little Mushroom Witchy-Poo has landed herself in a whole bunch of hot water. That's why I always just ignore the bodies of children floating down a river with knives stuck out of their chests... too much hassle, man. Tsundere Crow cracks me up, practising his smooth lines. Wonder how our girl is gonna talk her way out of this one. |

More darkness, more depression for our heroine, I am all for it. This is old school fairy tale, like the real Little Mermaid.
The only character we know ain't dying is the young changling boy who's name we don't know yet because he is the narrator, but Luna, talking animal friends, Claude, who knows. |

I didn't have any problems with the narration of episode 3. I don't know if I was wearing my cranky pants when I watched the first two, or if there was a shift where it was a bit less intrusive but I was all in.
I feel a little bad for the crow since the MC seems to have a thing for blonde pretty boys. That's got to put a little sting in his Tsundere routine. So, we are all clear that the whole mushroom thing is a metaphor for drug use right? I'm thinking this anime is really set in a rehab clinic in the 60's... |

Episode 4
Man, what a bunch of hilarious weirdos those Black Magician Council types are. Anyway, thanks to one of the loopiest vote taking exercises you'll likely ever see, Luna is granted her wish to raise the child who may become the End of All Things... with lots of thorny provisions tacked on, of course. Crow Boy must have been absolutely devastated to be ordered to keep tabs on her and the kiddo. I'm SURE the only reason he didn't object vociferously was because of his innate sense of duty. Heh. We got tantalizing glimpses of Cat Magician who tragically seems to be dead but may have more appearances down the line via flashbacks. I hope so, she seems adorable. |

Episode 5
Well, I got my wish for a substantial Cat Magician flashback and she was as entertaining as I assumed she would be. I'm bummed that she has apparently been executed, but also a little hopeful that things aren't quite as they appear. After all, we never actually saw her be killed. At the very least, I hope she's living the sweet life in Cat Forest. Anyway, seems like the story will start in earnest next week. |

I'm a little confused because we saw Cat Witch go to the great Cat Forests in the sky in the flashback, but the ghost that was described as being kept there by her last lingering regret appeared *after* the flashback chronologically. I prefer to think that the spirit of the Cat Witch was more like an angelic visitation than a haunted one, or that the spirit was a remnant echo sort of thing.
Or perhaps she has 9 lives, though I don't know if Japanese culture embraces that particular Westernism. |

Wish Crunchyroll would tell us what is going on? I remember they used to that.
