The time travel arc really recontextualizes Himmel into (even more of) a tragic character. Like, by now we all know that he's head over heels for Frieren, but after meeting Future Frieren, he now knows without a doubt they will never get together (and if Frieren was too dense to get it before, she has to get it after literally seeing his demon-induced fantasy world is marrying her and she doesn't even get the time to address it since she does the time warp again before she gets the chance to really speak to Himmel about it). Then to preserve the timeline he keeps on keepin' on, and then after watching her take off on her 50 year post-adventure journey, he takes off to carve the inscription and make the time loop stable.

It's other great strength is its versatility. Shifting from one genre piece to another. 'Exam Arc' was just that. 'Divine Revolte' was a short, sharp, action film. 'Eldorado' a carefully studied epic.
Now we've got 'The Festival'. Aka. a Cold War Spy Thriller.

A genre shift that should be a good opportunity to introduce some really interesting spells beyond the usual mundane/gag/combat genres we've seen so far.

I kind of got the sense that he always knew that. And off the top of my head I can't really recall any moments where it seemed like Himmel was actively pursuing a relationship.

I think it's hard to argue that him dropping to one knee and giving Frieren a ring wasn't at least a pursuit (even if he never bothered to be clear about it). I do agree with you though that I think he always knew deep down it wasn't in the cards. I mean, he gets hit with a supposedly "endless" spell to send him to a dream world and he recognizes that he's in one in record time (he beat Superman in the classic "For the Man Who Has Everything" by a mile ). Dude doesn't even get to kissing the bride before he's back in the fight.

Now you’ve got me wondering: I think it’s safe to assume Frieren did not know the significance of Himmel kneeling and offering her the ring when it happened (and likewise safe to assume Himmel knew that), but now that she’s spent so much more time around humans… do you think she knows what it means now?
