That’s genuinely pretty cool. Considering how long ago the 4Kids dub was, I wonder how similar the voice will sound.

Very cool to see the dub doing the same guest casting for Joy Boy as the Japanese version, and it's just cool to see the OG dub voice of Luffy (who I remember being pretty good, actually) being acknowledged in the later One Piece dub.
It's like how the Dragon Ball Super dub brought back the Ocean dub voice of Vegeta for that one episode where Vegeta fought an "evil" duplicate of himself. |

Was talking about this with my partner after seeing the original Japanese voice actor for Luffy voice Joy Boy. We both agreed that they should use the 4Kids voice actor for Joy Boy in English. While I hate the 4Kids dub it was his introduction to One Piece and I know he’ll love this.

I miss the 4Kids cast since they were unique and not just the Dragonball voiceactors again like the later dub.

That’s about as relevant as saying the 4kids dub of one piece was just the Pokémon voice actors again. |

It's pretty neat to see this and to see that this is her second role in the current One Piece dub (IIRC, she voiced Weevil's mom Miss Buckingham Stussy beforehand).

Giving the 4Kids dub VAs another chance might work out under the better scripts and direction of the Funimation dub.

She's a VERY good actress. She's just had TERRIBLE directing at 4kids which by 2008 gave up on good directing. By 2008 4kids could only get 4kids Luffy (Happy and Jolly) or Tai Chi Chasers Rai (Dour and angry but at least she had some range because that show has some surprising dramatic moments.) out of her. |

Back in the day I remember joking that Funi should have tried to recruit the 4Kids cast to voice the fake Straw Hats on post-timeskip Sabaody, and now here we are.

Marc Diraison not being cast so far is a major loss. Same with Veronica Taylor and some other 4kids VAs. |

As others have pointed out, Erica Schroeder is a great actress that absolutely deserves this moment in One Piece. Actually all the actors in the 4Kids dub are talented; they were just under poor direction and writing (and in some cases, poor casting). I know Erica, Lisa Ortiz, and Sean Schemmel have returned for the ongoing dub, but I’d also like to see Marc Diraison, Veronica Taylor, and Jason Griffith make comebacks too.

I've never liked how much hate the 4kids cast got. They were solid in other roles and the fan community chasing David Moo out of the business was absolutely terrible.

Love this and I wish we saw more of it. Just like when Dragonball brought in Brian Drummond to be the copy Vegeta. Recasts happen, studios change -- but showing respect for the actors that came before is so easy! I'm surprised to be saying this about a Crunchyroll dub....
