The first episode was pretty heavy on the drama. I mean, I get that tortured artists became a cliche for a reason, but the leads were acting like they were in literal thumbscrews. I know your art sucks because it isn't as good as mine, and mine is terrible! AAAAHHH! My art! My art! That said, I enjoyed it pretty well.

It's amazing the extent to which every anime about artists I've watched makes me hate artists more. Not art, but artists, as people. Like, THIS is the kind of thing they consider meaningful and justifying being a-holes to everyone around them?

I will drop this one. The story seems straightforward: Eren is passionate about art (graffiti) and doesn't tolerate mediocrity (while also juggling some daddy issues). Koichi wants to be somebody and sees art (graphic design) as the answer. Hmm, sure. Something about this show just didn't impress me. I was trying to find the words to make sense of why this show didn't impress me. Is it the (somewhat ironically) shoddy production values? Is it the overly dramatic main characters, Eren and Koichi? It's not just that. I think this is the best explanation for me: it feels like the show doesn't believe in what it is doing. Eren doesn't believe in mediocre art. Koichi wants to make a name for itself. In short, both are bent on a thing. Yet, I don't feel like the show believes in that. It's weirdly underwhelming, and I was left wanting more from a show that apparently doesn't want to offer that much. I only watched the first episode because I had some spare time. The synopsis seemed interesting, so I gave it a chance. Didn't pique my interest enough to make me stay on. Oh well. |
