Nadesico was such a fun show. I always hoped we would get a sequel show one day (the movie didn’t do it for me).

RIP

I'm standing at my desk surrounded by Nadesico laserdiscs, games, and merchandise. Thank you for all of the great work, Satou-san.

Bodacious Space Pirates is a personal favorite, but I've seen, enjoyed, and even own many of Sato's other works (MSN, Stellvia, Shigofumi, Lagrange, Helck, Lord Marksman), too. Big loss.

Nadesico was a formative experience for me, and I've been meaning to watch Bodacious Space Pirates and Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-ne for quite a while now. I have to do it this year.

Thank you for your hard work. Condolences to family and friends.

He worked on quite a few good shows, but I had forgotten about him lately.

Rest in peace, Tatsuo Sato.

I recall that there were some unspecified disputes regarding Nadesico (and Stellvia) that led to the cancellation of any potential sequel plans, which was a shame.

For those curious, it was reported about two decades ago:

Nadesico, for all its goofiness, had a lot to say about memory, nostalgia, and history — they formed a braid that spanned the entire series, and I always thought it wasn’t a coincidence that it aired roughly concurrently with one of the periodic controversies about the coverage of WWII in Japanese school books, given some events in the series (avoiding spoilers for a thirty year old series).

None of his later works really came close to the layering of Nadesico, in my opinion, though many were quite good, especially Bodacious Space Pirates , which was just a lot of fun.

Shingu was a sadly neglected series (one of those treasures Nozomi/RightStuf licensed), I liked it better than Stellvia and Lagrange.

May his memory be a blessing.

Wow, in looking over the list of shows he directed, he was one of my favorite directors and I didn't even know that. As has stated above, very sad news and I wish his family well. Crying or Very sad

Wow, I had no idea the same person was the creative voice behind so many notable titles. Unfortunately I haven't watched any of Sato's works yet, but a number of them are absolutely in my backlog. Rest in peace.

The Nadiesico anime was the first series I bought on DVD in a boxed set back in 2007. I was motivated to do so after I had the opportunity to watch The Black Prince on The Anime Network. Those two anime really did become great favorites of mine. I was always heartbroken that Sato was never able to finish Nadesico the way he had hoped, but the likes of Nadesico, Bodacious Space Pirates and Stellevia is still an amazing career. I hope Sato rests in peace.

My condolences. I'm a fan of his works. He was actually one of my favorite directors.

His work on Madan no Ou was one of those times when an LN adaptation actually managed to fulfill all expectations. Nadesico and Stellvia were both legendary too.
