Chin-Lan is a fun addition to the group. As expected she is another alcohol enjoyer (might as well be a requirement for joining their dorm) and personality wise I think she could be described as bubbly (though perceptive). Ibuki drinking with another person than just Botan out of sheer jealousy was funny, some of the faces she pulled were quite something (eff that girl from the flashback btw). The bit at the end was very intimate, which is something the show is very good at. |

The first half felt like an episode of Yama no Susume (it was in some ways). That makes sense though given that the mountain they visited was also featured in that show and even the events such as carrying the water bottles to the top were repeated. Add a lot of the staff from Yama working on the episode and you have something special. The second half was more flirting, Chin-Lan is being surprisingly aggressive. |

Do we think that a show that heavily portrays recreational drinking as a theme would show two girls making out? Or maybe even just say that they are interested in romance with each other.

Every episode (or half-episode) leaves me confused about who is gay for who. Except for Akane and Yaeka who seem to be their own established thing, the rest of them seem to be a polycule at this point.
It is funny that Chin-lan seems to think she's the MC in a harem show. |

It's very hard for me to critique this show - the OP, sound design, and aesthetic just immediately put me in a nostalgia coma, and I love it. Sometimes the blocky, fuzzy art style and animation feels like watching home videos on VHS, and it's got that same intimate feel to the interactions whenever Botan is talking to someone one on one.
It would be hard for me to describe to someone exactly why this is one of my favorites from the season, but there's no doubt that it is. |

Episode 8
When the second half started I wondered: “who are these two people?” And wondered if it was a flashback to Botan’s senior year in high school or something when I decided one of them was Botan. The other person didn’t look like Ibuki to me at all. Botan seems to be thinking in reply to Chin-lan’s query about Ibuki, “Who is leading who on?” |

It was indeed Ibuki with her, though the art made her look a bit different from most of the other episodes. The romance in the show is messy in a good way. In most romance anime it is very obvious who likes who and in what way. Here things are far less clear with lots of flirting and hints at being more serious yet without anything truly final. It seems Chin-lan is not a big fan of that.

We don't see Ibuki explicitly drawn happy very often. The Ibuki we saw in E8 was definitely the most vulnerable we've seen her. Clearly enjoying spending time with (just) Botan. Putting herself out there, making herself known, and bringing Botan to another picturesque drinking spot.
That definitely had Botan thinking about whether she's "leading Ibuki on" or not. |

Was Botan pretty directly flirting with Chin-Lan when she ordered the Taiwanese whisky and said she wanted to taste it? Maybe it is my imagination that it felt like this episode took a step up in making it explicit that it is romance. Chin-Lan herself seemed kind of taken aback by how forward Botan was acting, and thinking that Botan is leading on Ibuki.
The flashback to the outing date looks like it is getting romantic, that it does seem weird to it apparently be a story of them not dating. One of my thoughts was that when Botan was walking through the water she wanted Ibuki to follow her into a more secretive spot, which had me thinking Botan thinks they are not going anywhere because Ibuki didn't follow her or something. Maybe it is a reflection of the first part of the episode Akane thinking her bandmates are not as serious as she is. Sometimes the vibes of this show, it just feels like you are going into a situation or place that is very intimate, and then causes this kind of uneasiness because it is meant for someone else. |

I saw this as a continuation, not a flashback. Am I missing something about their time references?
I feel like the show is implying Botan was 'just having fun' before Chin-Lan said she was leading Ibuki on. That leads Botan to take a step back for a bit and really look at her relationship with Ibuki. In the B-part, the couple's roles are briefly reversed, with Ibuki leading Botan around town, picking alcohol for them, and setting them up with a date spot. We got a couple shots of Botan stopping and looking at Ibuki ahead of her - Botan is questioning her relationship with Ibuki. Is this fraternal or romantic? Then at the river, I think we get our answer. Botan takes the lead again, moving into the water and telling Ibuki to trust her. |

I'm with you here. I understood the 2nd half to be a continuation. That all the looks Botan gave Ibuki were framed by the conversation with Chin-Lan - especially the part where Chin-Lan said she thinks Ibuki probably thinks they're well on their way to dating - giving Botan a new perspective now recognizing the romantic undertones of what Ibuki says and does. I liked that the credits showed Chin-Lan's perspective is a little more nuanced. I looks like her older sister (or maybe just an older girl she had a crush on?) got "stolen" from her by another woman and that she was resentful about it, but eventually made friends with her sister's wife. |

While the previous episodes had plenty of moments that felt rather intimate this week went a step beyond with a confession scene that is among the best I have ever seen. Botan and Ibuki have stopped being friends and are now something more, what that is is still relatively undefined. Besides that it was great to see how far Ibuki has come. She is now far more assertive compared to the start and is even able to drink with others without Botan being in the room. |

Chin-Lan and Kanade being setup as the secondary couple is expected but looking good. Chin-Lan has generally been really good at picking up social cues and directing conversations well, and we see her continuously fail at that in our B-part. Is she getting especially flustered by Kanade in her heartbreak or just having an off day? I was a little put off by some of the animation choices as well this episode. The awkward still frame when Botan and Ibuki get inside the cabin stood out. I also didn't like the choice of giving Kanade sad chibi face when Chin-Lan mentioned Botan and Ibuki - that was a bit of tonal whiplash. There were a couple cuts in the drive to the cabin that were jarring too. Just overall more hiccups *ha* in animation/editing than I'm used to from this show. Other than that though, I'm still all aboard the Botan Blossoms train. Botan definitely went into dorm life expecting a fun time and came away with a lot more. The nerves from those interactions with someone right before a confession are well shown, and we ended up with a really charming confession scene. |

Considering how last episode ended, am I the only one who thought Botan drowned between episodes?
I feel kind of bad for Gujou. She had been crushing on Ibuki for so long, trying to get her to notice her feelings, then Botan swoops in and steals her. Also I just discovered all the characters have real instagram accounts. Botan: https://www.instagram.com/kamiina.botan/ Ibuki: https://www.instagram.com/eve.o0o0.keeey/ Kanade: https://www.instagram.com/ka_na_de.206/ Chin-Lan: https://www.instagram.com/chang.chin_lan/ Yaeka: https://www.instagram.com/yaeka_journy/ Akane: https://www.instagram.com/y0usir_jp/ There's not much to any of them - and Akane's has no posts - but it's a cute detail. Apparently some of Ibuki's posts are the actual ones seen in the show. |
