I jsut saw the oscar nominations, and for best animation they had Finding Nemo, Brother Bear, and something else. Millenium ACtress and Tokyo Godfathers didn't get the nomination. Too bad....

Yep, precisely the nominees I expected. The Triplets of Belleville was the "token" foreign animated nominee with all the critical momentum this year, while Dreamworks' Oscar campaign for Millenium Actress was non-existent and, Samuel Goldwyn films and Sony, while they did do a nice FYC ad for Tokyo Godfathers, released the film too late in the game for it to get the same sort of attention as Triplets.
Personally, if it were up to me, I'd sooner have Millenium Actress over Triplets, which had a great bawdy-but-Disney-esque black-and-white fake scratchy opening sequence in a nightclub, but, while it had interesting quirky visuals (including a Mickey Mouse head-shaped literal piece of crap, if you keep your eyes open), the story didn't quite hold my attention for the entire length of the film (and, for quirkiness, I preferred Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space). I am one of the few people whom seem to have a much higher opinion of Brother Bear than most of the critics did, and, while it doesn't deserve to win, I am pleased to see it nominated.
Since my top pick wasn't nominated, this looks to be the first year that I shall actually be rooting for the winner, Finding Nemo (unlike last year, when I preferred Lilo & Stitch, and I still do).
Even after Spirited Away won, as I expected it to, I knew that anime films even getting nominated would be the exception, not the rule, in most years, since the non kiddy TV franchise anime is still a lot more niche in the North American market than some anime fans make it out to be.
