Full Metal Alchemist Licensed (06:48 AM EST): According to the PS2 site on IGN, FUNimation announced Full Metal Alchemist at E3 this week. "Funimation will handle distributing the Fullmetal Alchemist cartoon in North America -- a cartoon that has already sold 51 episodes to Cartoon Network for an October air date." According to those who were at the conference, there has been no mention of which flavor of Cartoon Network it'll be on (Adult Swim or Toonami) while the disc release is apparently slated for January 2005 in the now becoming traditional method for FUNimation of the single disc and starter kit method. - Anime On DVD

The only thing I'm worried about here is cartoonetwork. FMA has a very mature and dark storyline, and I don't think it fits at all with Toonami and regular daytime block on CN. Hopefully it'll be put on that new teen targed toonami block or whatever it is, but still, even then, I'm expecting some edits. -_-
I really hope Funi won't try changing the music to this one.

I would expect edits. You should always expect edits when things are shown on tv. There's nothing you can do about it.
I think rather than be "worried" about it when things get shown on CN, is to be happy that the series got licensed. CN has been doing a fairly good job with series placement and the content of their shows, IMO. You'll get your unedited, subtitled DVD releases, just be happy that more people are going to know about the show by them deciding to air it on CN as well.

"51?" Maybe they're planning a special some time down the road?
This is great news, I'm hopeful that it'll either get a late Toonami showing (10:30pm) or an Adult Swim showing. Even on Adult Swim I feel they'll be a bit heavy on the edits as there are several very graphic moments of heads blowing off, limbs being severed, and people making all around greasy messes.
I have faith in Cartoon Network's judgement and they've had a great partnership with FUNi so they should be able to communicate any edits well.

And here I was just trying to think of how L'Arc's "Ready, Steady, Go!" will sound in the traditional manner since Funi regularly dubs the songs in English as well. Bleh...
Considering some of the graphic content that does come up, there are going to be some tough decisions made as to what content to edit.

If they keep with their traditions, there's a really good chance that they'll dub over the songs. But why does it matter? Once it gets released on DVD, you'll have uncut subtitled tracks with all the original music. If you're a dub watcher, it's not that hard to change the audio just for the songs. Besides, do you honestly listen to every opening and ending song for every episode anyway.

OMG!
This is bad! Why do all the cool anime's get picked up by CN? Now it's gonna suck.
Once CN gets a hold of and Anime, they totally screw it up. It becomes to popular and then any true otaku will just look like part of one of the crazed masses. If they put FMA, or any other anime, on CN, they MUST keep the OP. With out the OP, it's all crap. The trailers that they show for it will just make it worse. Since FMA is rated for teens, CN will most likely edit all the stuff that makes it FMA out so that younger kids will watch it. What are you thinking CN? All the great anime that are an artist's vision get picked up by CN get killed from repeat cycling.
And Funimation? Awww hell. These are the guys that screw up almost anything they make.
/Wow. I ranted pretty hard on this. Perhaps I over did it./

So, do they "traditionally" just change the OPs and EDs nowadays, or is it like DBZ and GT, where they dub the BGM too?
If they're just changing the songs, I don't mind so much. I'm sure they've realized dubbing the actual music in the series won't win over as many fans.
I haven't seen an ounce of any of their dubs post DBZ because of the fear of silly edits, but from what I hear, they're really pretty decent. Gomen...

OMG!!! WAKE UP!!!! CN has been good for the industry. Anime isn't a niche interest anymore. Help them help you...it's all good. I want to say more, but I don't want to turn this into "why people with your thinking hinder the industry more than a buttload of edits shown on some tv channel would" thread.

Yes. Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, FLCL, DragonBallZ, Kenshin...etc.etc..their franchises went KAPUTZ because of the endless cycling of showings on CN. Especially Big O. That one died big time.

No way.
the AN on comcast has been good for the "industry".
More to my point...
once CN starts showing it, there will be nothing fun about it at all. There will be no inside fun between otakus, Okatus will have to stand images of thier favorite anime printed on millions of t-shirts, a billion of snot nosed kids will take the fun out of watching teen rated anime, it's otaku hell.
but you're right. the shot at Funi was out of line.

"Good" for the fan community, and "good" for the industry are two completely different things. Sure, I'll be a but dissapointed that I'm not feeling so special because I'm no longer a fan of something that only a select crowd knows about, and it being only popular with a select crowd is not good for the industry. What you have there is known as the elitist attitude. What IS good for the industry is for FMA to make money, and to do this it needs exposure, and CN is exactly what that is. The industry is out to make money, not to make a select number of fans happy.

Will those billions of kids be watching the show with you? No. Don't worry, you can sneak in unobserved, snatch your DVD off the wall at Suncoast, and rush back home to watch the show with your select group of minions in your darkened otaku cavern. No one will ever suspect you're part of the mainstream anime viewing world.

I dunno, have you heard some Japanese Artists sing in Engrish?
But in all fairness, I'll reserve judgement untill I hear their song. Then i'll condemn it.

Now I may be a little disapointed with the edits but they will grow on me. And I am sure as hell gratefull for FMA being licensed in the first place!
