They say that men like to get what they've picked in one fell swoop, while women like to take their time and impulse-buy. This was echoed in the film Confessions of a Shopaholic (personally, I think she needs a few lessons from me before she needs counselling).
I'm slighly different though, when it comes to anime spending. I'll set a limit, and spend spend spend until I reach that limit. What about you guys? Last edited by HyugaHinata on Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:18 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I'll spend only what I can afford or what ever I have an interest in. Since I'm limiting my anime to sales usually on TRSI or cheap off of Amazon marketplace I usually limit my spending. Like if I see something I want to buy I will buy it if I have the money.

Unlike you, my limit is a lower than $20,000, it's usually around $200 (it varies depending what sale is going on at Rightstuf and how long it'll last). It's funny that you make this thread as soon as I start my Box.net account and upload my Shopping Catalog to it. I did that just in case there was thread asking about how we shop for anime; I was actually planning on making this one day, but whatever.
My way of shopping is very, very detailed and focused around mainly Rightstuf, Amazon, and Buy.com. This is my catalog:http://www.box.net/shared/nekxbty4gx Key: Green=Not seen or previewed(blind buys) Blue=Buy.com Violet=Amazon Red=Not there but may return or Not there in entirety *=Used item The double asterisk next to PPD and Nadesico in pink are personal reminders I do this to moderate my shopping. By doing this, I ensure myself that I'm getting the best deals on the items I want and to make sure that I don't spend money on something that I could get months down the road (and probably at a cheaper price). I never buy items that aren't on sale or in the bargain bin unless it has a low quantity and I feel it won't restock for a while, sells fast and is of high priority to me. |

My anime shopping habit from January 2009 to the end of May 2009 was, in a word, retahded. I plunked down about $2,500 CDN in that time period which netted me 76 anime TV series titles (I already owned Mezzo DSA) and 7 anime movie titles (I already owned three before that time).
So now I've got this ridiculous backlog of 50 anime TV series titles to watch (I've seen 27 of them so far) and 5 anime movies. The bulk of my purchases came from TRSI, some from Amazon, a few second hand, 1 new from a comic book store (Planetes) and a few from dealers at the Anime North con. It would have been way more intelligent to have set a $150 per month budget for anime from the start and watch what I had purchased before making a new order. Oh well, live and learn. I have resolved not to buy any more anime until I have pretty much licked my current backlog. Given my typical speed of watching DVD series titles (between 5 or 6 per month) that should take me into the new year. |

It depends. I've never shop till I drop, I'd rather wait and think about all pros and cons. If I decide to buy I look for the cheapest nad most comfortable options, then think twice again.
I've a nice comics shop when I usually find all new things I need( I have a list of all series I buy) and very often second hand treasures(recently-old M&A magazines from my childhood). But when an occasion suddenly appears I don't think much- for example if someone sells old mangas(or other stuff) for very low price(People who don't contact with fandom usually don't know how their stuff is worth). The same with one-day sales in shop with electronic goods- Utena Movie -22%? Sold! Last edited by EireformContinent on Fri Jul 03, 2009 9:19 am; edited 2 times in total |

Cool, thanks for the feedback. It looks like you're all more savvy than I am.
For my next mega-order (expected value to be kept a surprise), I plan to put one of several different series I haven't watched or seen, and after I have about 50 or so new titles, I'll up the quantity. And no, I'm not doing this just to do better in the guessing games. |

Interesting. Is that sort of thing common in your country, or are you a rare and lucky exception to the norm? As for myself, I very much buy what I can afford, and will be hesitant to spend even when I have some spending ability, like I do now. Since utility bills can vary, I generally prefer to buy anime when I know that I'm not going to have to put any unpredictable sums towards living costs in the upcoming future. |

I must say that I don't know. "My shop" is just near to Market Square in Kraków and I've been there hundred times before somebody told me that it's there-there's only a little advertisement on the gate and if you don't know that's there you won't find it-like many other interesting shops and places. Sometimes people on forums mention that in other cities are similar shops with friendly staff and lots of rare goods but they seem to be known only to natives. |

I get my paycheck, I take out money for bills/savings/set aside for larger purchases down the road where applicable... whatever's left over is divided into a weekly 'free money' allotment. I can spend that money on whatever I want as suits my whims... but once I hit that limit, I'm done until the next week.
As a result, I find I spend a lot of time 'window shopping'- I look and look at things I want, see if there's sales- but if I can't really decide on something to get, I buy nothing. Like everyone else, I don't buy anime unless it's on sale- and dedicated anime-buying up until this year has left me with such a massive backlog I've largely quit buying new titles until I get somewhat caught up. (In the meanwhile, I've been trying to buy cases/manuals/replacement copies of my disc only PS1 games, for completion's sake. Umm... anyone got a Suikoden 2 case lying around? It's a long shot, but I'd really like to get that case...) |

I'm in my (finally) last year of college, so the disposable income situation's been tight for the last few years. I'll wait for shows to drop in price, then go Bargain Bin diving for them. I'll also pick things up from the weekly and various specials if they suit my interest and I can afford the expense.
During winter and summer break, when I've got some sort of income flowing in, I'm more inclined to buy things fron online retailers outside of Right Stuf. To aid in these purchases, I like to use the DVD Price Search website. This has helped in controlling the costs of single discs that I've purchased over they years. If an item I really want is dangerously close to OOP status, I'll usually bite the bullet and pick it up, no matter the cost. In an item is OOP and has become very difficult to find, I place those items on a convention purchase list, since I've found the probability of such items appearing at a con is greater than being found through normal means. |

When it comes to making big purchases in anime/manga, I usually save up about $100 (usually out of two or four of my biweekly paychecks XP). I never spend more than that in a single purchase, and besides I can get plenty to satisfy me with just $100.
On occasion though, outside of my savings, I do buy things on impulse or when things come out at my local Wal-Mart or Best Buy instead of waiting until I saving up my anime/manga fund. Examples being 5cm Per Second or Strait Jacket when they were available: I ended up purchasing them the day of release or soon after instead of waiting (and I don't regret doing it ). I'll be doing the same thing soon with Vol. 4 of Moribito since I really don't want to wait until October to purchase it with my next big order.

I think I just found my new favorite shopping site. That search site is pretty awesome. |

I've actually made a want list for Otakon, if I see it there, I'll probably get it (I have some missing manga volumes so I wrote down specific volume numbers), and a bunch of series I'm interested in. As a result, most of my joy money is being saved for Otakon (only about two weeks left of waiting!)
Still, I do a lot of window shopping, which leads to me coming back to the internet to do research. I do whim buy more often I notice, mostly on either TRSI bargain bin or used DVD store stuff. I notice now I only tend to indulge myself if I've already seen the series (like Gurren Lagann), because I already know I like it so I'm not risking any money on it. I also won't tend to buy something from a used store if I can't find all of it there, I prefer to get the whole thing. And as King of Harts said, most of us just plain don't have your budget, HH. I tend to get thing in increments of about $50 when I order online (or just enough to avoid shipping costs) or get single books at a time from Borders w/ coupons. Of course, that all goes out the window during Xmas and B-day seasons (which coincide within the same week for me), then I go wild, but still follow my rules of research and finding the best deals. |

For buying, I always tend to set a budget. When buying online, it's usually buying enough from Rightstuf to just get their free shipping. At conventions, I'll only pull out a certain amount at a time. But if there's someone that I must have a good price, I'll go ahead and get it.
People not being good with being responsible over their money if their concern. Like people who spend far more than they should have at cons, or the opposite of people who just don't buy anything. |

Like everywhere- the middle of the road is the most difficult way. I've never had enough money to buy whatever I wanted, but noe I see there's not a problem. Looking for stuff and thinking about buying it can give more pleasure than just buying. Every thing in my collection have it's own history-bought, got, exchanged, found, NET, shop, other fan, family, friend. Now I think that if I had enough money to buy all of them at once I wouldn't be so proud of them now:) |
