I was wondering if the Utena manga was ever serialized in a magazine, and which magazine if it was.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I remember reading an interview with Chiho Saito when she said that the 5-volume Utena seres was printed in a magazine aimed at younger girls, and so she couldn't put in the sexual themes that she and the rest of Be-Papas expected to put in.
Given that Sho-Comi can be pretty darned sexual (it's where Mayu Shinjo series are published), my guess is that the series was published in Chao or one of Chao's sister magazines. |

In Japan, it originally serialized in a magazine called Kappa Extra. Here, Animerica Extra.

Nooo... Kappa Extra's the Italian magazine that it was serialized in.
According to this page, it was indeed serialized in Ciao. |

It's worth noting that Ciao is a manga phonebook aimed at elementary school girls. ^^ |
