Yes, despite the fact that I am new here, I do know that there is an encyclopedia...

However, under every letter, there has to be a good hundred links to click. That is why I'm here, needing recomendations that you experts think I'd like. Surprised

Here's some info:

1. Fruits Basket is my favourite so far.
2. DNAngel is unfinished, but I love it so far, up to 13.
3. I loved Gravitation.
4. I'd prefer something with good characters and a nice plotline, rather than a bunch of unnamed people fighting with machines.

If you need anymore information as to what I like, so you can recomend something, ask away. I did not like the first three episodes of Full Metal Alchemist, so please don't suggest that unless it honestly gets better.

:B Thank you, all. Hopefully, this isn't breaking any rules by requesting personal recomendations. Some sites do that.

Hi, posting threads asking for recommendations is breaking the rules (I think). However if you look under the sticky thread general anime questions you should find what you need.

I don't know if it says anything about it in the rules but in the sticky thread general anime questions it reads

Quote:
If you have any general questions relating to anime, ask them in this thread, and we'll try to find an answer for you!

(This material was taken out of the newbie thread and made more orderly. Rather than deleting all the posts over there, I figured it'd be easier just to make a new thread and keep it pruned as needed.)

If you have new contributions, post'em here. We'll keep this thread nice and orderly so it's easy to find answers. Yes, this means we will delete your posts as neccessary to keep this thread tidy.

-=-=-=-=-

Question: I'm new to anime. I like (some genre). What should I buy?

Underneath that it has a list of shows from different genres that one may like. So I assume this type of thread should not be posted. I seem to remember threads like this being locked before, I could be wrong however. I have only recently started using this site again.

...Uh, alright then.

Obviously it doesn't state this in the rules, but it does somewhere else? Anyway, I saw a similar thread to this, still open, on the first page of the Anime forums, and no one who posted there said it was against the rules. They only gave the person recomendations.

Apparently I'm not going to get the same. That's fine, though. I'll head somewhere else.

Okay, thanks anyway.

-Sii.

I'm not attacking you or anything. That's just the impression I got so I directed you to the sticky thread which I thought would help. Like I said I could be wrong and if so I'm sure someone will give you some suggestions.

From all the reviews I've read about Fruits Basket, I don't think that you'll find a better anime in that genre. I am currently watching this series and have seen two episodes so far.

It seems that you like shoujo and yaoi. The only series that I can personally recommend to you would be Cardcaptor Sakura if you don't already have it. It is a few years old, but it is definitely one of my all time favorite anime. It is a mahou shoujo series with a little bit of yaoi in it and has some truly great characters in my opinion.

You might also like this much newer title, Kyo Kara Maoh!. I think it has heavy yaoi elements in it along with attractive men if that's what interests you. If you want to look forward to the distant future, you might like Loveless, which I don't know for sure if it'll be licensed. I don't really follow yaoi, so I don't really know of other titles.

Mr Mania: I never had it in my head that you were attacking me. Sorry if it came off that way in my 'closing' speech, I was just trying to give up lightly.

Snowfairy: Now, I believe I know what Shoujo means, but I'm not sure of the correct terming of it for Anime. Could I please have an explanation?

As for this yaoi concept, I've heard it everywhere but still haven't gotten what it is. I've also seen another 'y' word similar to it, relating to anime. Could I please have another explanation, if you don't mind?

Thank you, also for the recomendations. I'll look into them.

According to the lexicon yaoi is....

lexicon wrote:
Yaoi is is the term used to describe manga or anime with strong, graphically portrayed homo-erotic themes involving men. In otherwords, yaoi is pornographic Anime featuring men with men. Unlike North American gay-porn, the target audience for yaoi is female. The word yaoi is actually an acronym of "Yama nashi, Ochi nashi, Imi nashi" (No climax, no point, no meaning), this is because yaoi, much like other forms of pornography, and unlike shounen-ai, often focuses exclusively on the sex, with only the minimal necessary story.

Of late, it has become increasingly popular in North America for shounen-ai titles to be labelled "yaoi," both by fans and distributors.

Edit - The similar "y" word you heard is probably yuri which is the same as yaoi but involving women. Go to the lexicon for more information on yuri and other anime related terms.

...O____O

I see. Thank you. In that case, I don't think I like yaoi if it's graphic in that sense...

I think I'll look for more terms before I end up sounding even more unknowledgable.

Shoujo literally means girl, but I use the word to refer to the particular genre of anime that is targeted towards females. Mahou shoujo is magical girl. The "yaoi" that I'm talking about in these titles isn't the hardcore, graphic kind that msi435 mentioned. It is mostly just the non-sexual relationship between two guys. In Cardcaptor Sakura it is pretty much just implied.

All three of the titles that you mentioned contain yaoi elements in it. I think Gravitation has much more of it than the other two.

Oh, oh, okay. -relieved sigh- Good, then in that case, you're right.

So yaoi doesn't always mean extremely graphic in that sense? Does it go the same for 'yuri' as well?

Thanks, guys, I'm learning a lot.

Instead of referring to it as yaoi refer it as shounen-ai. While yaoi refers to male on male sexual relationships, shounen-ai refers to male to male relationships of the kind you are talking about.

It goes for yuri also. If there is graphic sexual content in the anime, you will most likely not see it openly displayed in large stores such as Best Buy. Titles with that kind of content are usually referred to as "hentai," which literally means "perverted." You shouldn't worry about accidentally picking up yaoi or yuri titles with graphic sexual content because they are extremely rare, at least in the U.S.

I think that is technically correct, but I'm just going by what the majority of Americans call it.
