I've always thought that the art in ARIA was gorgeous. Amano's technique of illustrating light, water, and nature are simple but life-like, the character designs are cute, and the imagery is breath-taking. Oh, if only ADV would take it out of hiatus...

I also like the art in Nausicaa, though it takes some 'involved reading.' It's etchy, like a pen-and-ink from an old manuscript, but beautifully detailed.

I would have to say Houshin Engi. The art in the first few volumes isn't spectacular, but around the middle, it gets amazing. It has a really unique style and the action scenes are really well drawn.

I haven't read too many titles, but I can definitely say Alichino and Yuu Watase's manga have detailed art. I really like Alichino's art style, it's really gorgeous. I agree that Nausicaa's detail is amazing, I think it was one of the first titles that caught my eye when I first got into manga.
I also think Takeshi Obata is a really skilled artist, since he not only draws his people well, but also the backgrounds. In Hikaru no Go, a lot of the background scenes are really detailed and drawn well too. I never really see anything "wonky" or "off" like in Princss Ai. He gets the mood just right, and although his art isn't as exxagerrated as in some other manga, his expressions are drawn very well.

One other artist I forgot to mention: Masatsugu Iwase, who worked on the Gundam SEED manga. The art is detailed and there are hardly any spots where things could have been better. Not to mention, all of the mecha is drawn extremely well. The manga art is noticibly superior to that of the anime. The amount of screen tones used is...a lot. The first few chapters were a bit...primitive, but the style really improves in volume 2.

I know it's kinda different compared to the other titles listed, but I really like the Bleach style. It's really inventive (just like Kishimoto-san's in Naruto). It's not too detailed--it's very simple. I just think it's a really attractive style.

Yea, Bleach has a cool angular style to its characters that I really enjoy. The art in Naruto is ok, but in recent Japanese chapters(from what i've seen in previews), it's just downright ugly.

Ken Akamatsu (Love Hina, Negima) I fell in love with his art style years ago. It's got a sort of smooth yet angular feel to it and definitely keeps you involved.

Yua Kotegawa (Arcana, Anne Freaks) Entrancing art style; well colored.

Kiyohiko Azuma (Azumanga Daioh, Yotsubato!) A one-of-a-kind unique style untouched by any artist I've ever seen. It allows the artist to express any idea without need for words.

Range Murata (Last Exile, Blue Sub No.6) Yet another unique and untouchable art style. He has worked on many artbooks on the side and not only anime. At times, his CG can look almost like real life pictures while at the same time still giving off an artistic feel.

Yuji Iwahara (King of Thorns, Chikyu Misaki) Nice shadowing, unique eyes, and good technique overall in drawing faces and bodies.

Yoshitoshi ABe (NieA_7, Texhnolyze) He has done his fair share of one-shots, doujinshi, and manga as well. An art style that easily matches his typically dark themed stories and expresses his point thoroughly. If you liked Haibane Renmei, wait until you see the doujin.

Tohru Fujisawa (GTO, Rose Hip Rose) Also a unique style, though I have found his storylines his most interesting qualities. He has come a long way from Shonan Jun'ai Gumi in his art.

Tahiko Kimura (My Name Is Zushio, Seto no Hanayome) Probably least known of these, Kimura's art may not be so unique but to me is still just as good. He seems to have a good ability to draw and definitely takes advantage of it in his manga, creating an awesome story with a good display of emotion in art form.

I agree with your reasons for all of these. I like the simple style in Yotsuba&!, and Akamatsu's style does, like you said, have a very smooth, easy-to-read style. I really want those special Murata figures they were selling at a recent convention I went to. (The others I haven't read.)

The art in Naruto is some of the best I've seen, but I know it's probably not in your opinion. I like how clean and complex it is, even if it looks really simple. (It's my favorite!) It was influenced by a lot of other popular shonen series. He also is does a good job with black and white contrasts.

For me, it's not the art of Naruto itself that's good (though as you said, the contrasts are nice) but the designs. His character designs are very unique and individualize each character, so there's no way you can mix them with other characters from a different series. Each has alot of detail to it, and all of them scream ninja yet are completely different and original than the usual "black-clad uniform' everyone thinks of. The various 'aesthetic' he uses throughout the world: from the clothes, to the architecture, the scrolls and items, and even the animals, all ties into the ninja theme. While I find his art a little... messy at times, Masashi Kishimoto's designs for Naruto are just awesome. Very Happy

I completely agree with everything you said here. I love how easily he can create so many unique characters, at least one you can identify with.
Oh, and I think it's interesting that you can notice that his art gets cleaner and more detailed throughout the volumes. (The volumes VIZ has released now aren't exactly attractive artwise.)

Dont get me wrong, the art in Naruto is good(downright ugly was a bit strong lol), I also like the black/white contrast. The simplicity actuall adds quite alot(compared to some manga where you cant even tell what the hecks going on). It's just that, in the earlier volumes, I think the characters just seemed more charming. Now when I look at Naruto, he seems kinda stiff, but in the earlier ones, he looks full of life. I dunno. Maybe I'm just weird. Shocked

The day he creates a manga series,I'll go insane. As far as anime goes, he's the best character designer. Alot of his drawing are eerily realistic.

I think I get what you're saying. You have to admit that the characters have improved, but the spoiler[younger] Naruto was much more of, well...an idiot, so he was funnier and more lively. I'm just hoping more people will like Sakura later on.

Jiro Tanaguchi-His art is some of the best I've ever seen; from the mindblowing detail of Icaro to the amazing use of shadows and shading in Benkei in New York to the amazing landscapes of Kamigami no Itadaki, Tanaguchi always amazes.

Taiyo Matsumoto-Matsumoto's art often changes from manga to manga, but it's always unique and impressive. Heavily influenced by European comics, his art is surreal, highly kinetic and rich with detail. It's tough to pick my favorite of his styles, but I kind of like his more recent, toned-down approach, though I still love his wild Black and White-era style.

Hitoshi Ashinano-His art is one of the biggest appeals of Yokohama in my opinion, as it creates a wonderful atmosphere and a almost mystical feel.

Hiroaki Samura-Like Ashinano, Samura has a real knack for drawing amazing backgrounds and enviroments. But the main reason I'm listing him is for his amazing action sequences, sketchy style and wild character designs. He's also got a real talent for drawing emotions.

Kosuke Fujishima-He's really just an all aroung great artist: very nice designs, good use of page layouts and nicely detailed enviroments are just a couple of his strong points. His girls are all beautifully designed as well, and unlike other artists, he doesn't just use them for fanservice, but rather for a more wholesome sensuality.

Iou Kuroda-Kuroda's got an amazing sense of style. Even when his art is very rough and unpolished it looks great because of the impressive detail and super-cool style. Sexy Voice and Robo is my favorite example of his work, as it's more refined than some of his other stuff but still has a unique edge and amazing detail.
