Alright I have the bilingual Version of Cardcaptor Sakura Version one i bought at Kinokuniya, (the type used for students studying english in Japan)
but while i was looking at some websites, it says that it's just as worse as the regular american releases (i assume the first prints L-R version) But in what ways? On the the site it says that it was going to be reviewed, but i'm awfully curious what is wrong with it... |

I have both the bilingual, the original English version and the re-issue, and to be honest I didn't think there was really that much in it. I didn't find any of the translations particularly bad.
I think I like Tokyopop's re-issue version better, though there's really not much difference between that and the bilingual; I don't have my original TP release of vol 1 so I can't compare volume for volume, but the only big differences between the re-issue and the original was the format change and the addition of slightly better characterisation and the honorifics. The bilingual one is good if you're comparing translation to original dialogue, but other than that, while I don't think there's anything that really sets it apart as a better version or anything, it's not a bad version. I find the differences are really that the bilingual one is a pretty straightforward or direct translation while the Tokyopop uses the language to try and characterise the speaker a little more. I guess it depends on what you're looking for. If what you want is a pretty literal translation and the original dialogue to read yourself, then regardless of what some websites may say you probably made the right choice. I prefer the Tokyopop re-issue, just because I think it reads better. |
