Hi everyone. I'd like to have some recommendations on Japanese manga magazines.
Currently I buy Dengeki Daioh every month for leisure reading during my trip to school. But seriously, 500 pages a month are far from enough as I spend at least one hour a day on commuting. Therefore I would like to know if there are other similar magazines suitable to the taste of the general Dengeki-Daioh readers? I am considering Afternoon, since I am pretty interested in Mushishi. Nevertheless, the more suggestions for me to choose from, the better. For your information, my favourite Daioh titles are Yotsubato!, Kamichu and Kashimashi. I also enjoy Manabi Straight, Blood Alone and Gunslinger Girl very much. As for manga in general, my favourites are Aria and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. Thank you very much in advance. Shonen Jump is the best because it has the best kind of manga and the best manga.

If you want Japanese ones, I recommend three besides Shonen Jump. Young Jump, for having stuff in there that is funny, mature and dark. It is intended for mature audiences as well, and you get to see plenty of pin-ups. Gekkan Gangan, because there's going to mainly action and fantasy type titles, with maybe a few moe titles in there too. Last is Gekkan Champion Red, which has the same thing as Gangan, but with content equivalent to Young Jump.

OMG I love you Doraneko!! Your manga taste is almost identical to mine!
As I said before, Dengeki magazines are rather special; finding similar magazines might not be easy. However, as fighterholic said I do recommend magazines with "Young" in their titles, e.g. Young Jump, Young Magazine, Young Sunday, and Young Animal. For even more serious stuff aimed at older readers, try Ultra Jump, Business Jump, Morning, and Afternoon. IMHO Afternoon is probably the best seinen manga magazine. And Mr.Roboto, I can assure you that Doraneko has a very little chance loving Shonen Jump Japan. While I still read Shonen Magazine (SJ's biggest rival) from time to time to enjoy its fan service (Negima et al.), I stopped reading SJ many years ago, for its tsuyoku naritai theme no longer interests me. |

Hey Dormcat! Great to meet another another person on the web with so similar manga interests with mine
 . Your personal choices probably have great reference value for me. So, can you tell me what are your top 3 favourite manga magazines? Also, how should I choose from all the Young magazines possible? It is impossible to get every one of them to look through due to my financial constraints (pretty similar to those of every college student ).
For Shounen Jump, just as Dormcat said, its typical type of storyline is not really my cup of tea. The plot of striving to be the strongest may be a bit interesting at first with the introductory/background stuff and how the main character got his determination from. Yet as soon as the journey starts, it would just be an infinite loop with the same lump of stuff repeating in every single chapter. My view of the magazine maybe a bit stereotypical and not updated enough, so please feel free to tell me more about the magazine if there are decent titles in it. |

I flipped through the latest issue of Shounen Jump, and in addition to the huge arsenal of the typical tsuyoku naritai, there's now harem titles involving girl aliens and confused schoolboys. Nothing even remotely close to YKK though.

Just based on what you read, I'd say go with Afternoon. It's probobly one of the better magazines I've read stuff from, and it has a pretty diverse range of titles, from serious seinen to otaku fodder to semi-alternative. Ikki is somewhat similar, though it focuses much more on the serious/"literary" and particuarly alternative/progressive fare, with some exellent titles. The ratio of exellent titles to so-so titles is higher than Afternoon in my opinion (though I'm not into alot of what's in Afternoon), but your best bet is to go with Afternoon. Other than those two, you might check out Comics BEAM and Weekly Morning. If you want some one-shots, check out the incredible Comics Cue.

Occasionally I go to the book store and buy Newtype USA. It's an anime and manga magazine. It mostly has articles and information about anime and manga, but it has this small part of the magazine where part of a manga series is ("Manga insert"). I guess the best part of the magazine is that it comes with a dvd with three full anime episodes and a poster. It's not exceptionally exciting, long, or well priced for that matter. I enjoy it though.

Both of these (if Super Manga Blast is still around, which I don't think it is) are fairly decent English magazines, but Doraneko was specifically asking about Japanese publications. Unfortunately, my experience with Japanese magazines is limited and I am also fairly certain my tastes arenot on the same lines anyway, so my suggestions wouldn't be the most helpful. However, it seems there have been plenty of good and helpful suggestions already made, so I don't feel quite as bad. ~Shadrach Anki |
