I need your opinions choosing between 2 animes, I recently tried ordering fruits basket but had a bad shipment, so I have been asked to pick another box set. So what do you think Midori Days Or His and Her Circumstances!?! [EDIT: Changed your topic to be more precise. -TK] |

Midori Days is a pure, often cutesy romantic comedy sprinkled with occasional nudity. Despite a couple of weak episodes in the middle, it's a generally fun view with a very satisfying conclusion and some great comedic outtakes. Nowhere near as perverse as the "I can't get a girlfriend but now I have a girl for a right hand" concept sounds. At 13 episodes, the length feels right.
His And Her Circumstances (aka Kare Kano) is also a romantic comedy, but a much, much more eccentric one. It's about a girl who's always put on a "Miss Perfect" front who encounters a guy who's doing basically the same thing and how they wind up falling in love. Though it packs a lot of wild and wacky content, it is also heavily introspective and spends a lot of time having its leads work out how to be true to themselves and each other. It has far worse artistry and technical merits than Midori Days but better writing and no fan service. It also has a reputation for having a very unsatisfying end for its 26-episode run, but the manga extends the story much farther. Overall, Midori Days is probably the safer (and cheaper) pick as long as you don't mind some nudity, but Kare Kano is a series well worth seeing. |

Kare Kano is, in my opinion, the the best romance anime out there. The main characters were great, I loved Yukino and Arima. The story develops at a good pace, when things seem like they may be starting to go to slow all of the sudden another major step in the relationship between the two takes place. It never feels to slow or to fast. The only complaint I have about it is the end. Though upon watching it a second time it didn't seem nearly as bad.
Midori Days is something that I feel no need to watch a second time. It was fairly enjoyable when I watched it but it didn't keep excited and really drawn into it like Kare Kano did. Like was said before, Midori Days is the one with the fan service though, so if that's important to you than it's the way to go, but if you're just looking for a good romance, I would most definetely recommend Kare Kano. |

Sorry! I know what you are saying. I was basically wondering if any of the animes in the list provided were of similar/better value then the two I first chose - as i an new to anime I couldn't really make a list. Thanks |

Personally, I'm on the opposite spectrum. While I found Kare Kano to be a great series, I've watched it once, and I'm finished with it. However, I've revisited Midori Days what seems like countless times, and whenever I want to rewatch a series, it always seems among the most appealing. In terms of bang-for-buck, Midori Days is one of the smartest anime purchases I've ever made. Ultimately, I think it comes down to what kind of a story you do prefer: both are romantic comedies, but one is shonen focused and other is shoujo focused. From what you said about trading in the Fruits Basket set, pingy, it sounds like you didn't find it to be all that enjoyable, so I would say Midori Days would be your safer attempt. |

The Fruits Basket set was damaged, so I need to pick another title - which of the two are shonen and which shoujo. I am female so maybe that could be another factor into which I would like - thanks for your patience I am such a newb |

Ahhh. I was thinking you just didn't like Fruits Basket (which I would've found odd, as it's a great series I'd take the linked thread's advice and get up a My Anime page. That would go a LONG way in helping sort out your interests and in letting us know what you really liked, didn't like, etc. Plus...I think they're fun to make and maintain, so there's always that. |

Oh it's too bad you can't just get the Fruits Basket back. That is such a sweet anime. I also LOVED Midori. Haven't seen Kare Kano yet myself though.

I've seen the first ep of "Midori days" and i found it pretty amusing. But i haven't continued it because i watched the 1st ep when i was overseas. As for "Kare Kano", i haven't seen any of it but i heard that it was excellent anime to watch.
Im going to watch both series either way, sometime in the future. So basically, im saying there both are going to be good to watch. -DaZ |

Well, personally I would choose Kare Kano if we were talking about something that I was going to spend money on. I have seen both series and enjoyed them both, but as for something I'm willing to spend my $$$ on then there is no question in my opinion.
If you want something quick and cute that will keep you amused while you watch it then Midori no Hibi is fine. If you want something that can keep you thinking even after you have seen every episode then Kare Kano would be my choice. Will you be watching either of these series alone, with friends, or with a significant other? That type of thing would definately influence my decision. These two series go about telling their stories in very different ways so if you're planning on watching either of them with other people then you definately need to take their tastes into consideration. Kare Kano has been a hit with some of my friends, while others seem to find it boring. Midori no Hibi is funny to some and too campy for some others. I haven't even bothered showing Kare Kano to some of my friends because I simply know their attention spans are about as big as my pinky finger, but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy the series. In gerneral it seems like Kare Kano is rated significantly higher than Midori no Hibi, at least on this website. Maybe you should try to find somebody who might have a few episodes of either series and check them out, see what you think. |

From what I've read, I think the Kare Kano might be the choice for me, I'd most probably be watching it alone - not many of my friends are anime fans. Anyone offering episodes? |

Yay for Australia!
In my opinion Midori no Hibi was a very fun fling while Kare Kano was a slow story intensive romance. Midori no Hibi being only 13 eps long has to get through the stroy faster than Kare Kano and because of this I also find the story paced better (Kare Kano was so slow! It was like having to pick out all the important bits from heaps of eps. Just my opinion though.) If you can get over the small amount of ecchi in the show (and pretty much every time it is only used for comedic effect) the I would go for Midori no Hibi. This isn't a big point but the animation in Midori no Hibi is definitly better. And if it's cheaper than Kare Kano, so much the better! |

I own them both, I've seen them both, and I'd watch either one again. However, Kare Kano definitely gave me more of a "This is a great anime" feeling, while Midori Days, while cute and enjoyable, felt more like another standard romantic comedy with a slight fantasy twist. (This may be because I watched KK in July 2004 when I was relatively "new" to anime, but watched MD in March 2006 after I'd seen many more series.) KK has a diverse cast of interesting characters, and is more grounded in reality if you don't count the overexaggerated reactions. KK's romance is better developed, and while the end is, as people warned, not conclusive, I still liked what I saw throughout the series. I like to think that the animation in KK was more "experimental" than low-quality, but then again, the "experimental" label may be a disguise. You also have to take into account that KK was made in 1998 and MD was made in 2004, so of course the animation quality will differ.
They are both worth owning, but if you want more serious drama, go with KK, and for more wacky comedy and fanservice, for with MD. KK is coming out in a thinpack form next month, so it'll be on par price-wise with MD. Finally, if DVD extras are your thing, KK is the way to go-TRSI does a great job with notes, extensive sign subtitling, interviews, and much more; check the Encyclopedia entries for details. |
