Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky (TV)

Genres: fantasy

Plot Summary: In order to survive the eventual arrival of the "Dusk End," people of the western reaches of the "Land of Dusk" devoted their efforts to rediscover and recreate lost alchemic technologies. Those technologies were then gathered in the alchemy city known as "Central," where research was conducted on how to halt the advance of the twilight. Having learned the newest alchemic techniques in Central, young alchemist Logy requested a transfer to an understaffed town of Colseit on the frontier to make use of his abilities. There he meets Escha, an apprentice girl assigned to the Development Department. Together, the two make a promise to use their alchemic techniques to bring success to the Development Department.
----------------------------------

There, in order to survive the eventual arrival of the "Dusk End," the people devoted their efforts to rediscover and recreate lost alchemic technologies. Rediscovered technology from the past era was gathered in the alchemy research city known as "Central," where research was conducted on how to halt the advance of the twilight.

One of the heroes is a young man who researched alchemy in Central, the other a girl living in a small town on the frontier. This girl's name is Escha. In the process of using her knowledge of ancient alchemy to help others, she was assigned to the Development Department. The young man's name is Logy. Having learned the newest alchemic techniques in Central, he requested a transfer to this understaffed town to make use of his abilities, and meets Escha when he is assigned to the Development Department as well. The two make a promise to use their alchemy together, and bring success to the Development Department.[/quote]

Episode 1: It was cute imo in terms of the delivery. It felt a bit slow though with the setup so far. There's not much action so far but I don't mind it. I liked the delivery of it overall with the themes. But with their technology, it should be interesting to see what else the show has to offer. I also hope for more world building coming out of this show.

The chara design (especially for Escha-chan herself) is absolutely gorgeous so I'm quite interested in seeing this.

I will edit my post once a sub is out. I don't have the confidence to watch this raw. lol

I just rushed to beat the game in time for this thing. Then it threw me a curve ball at the end and tacked on an extra spoiler[300+ days to in-game clock]. I thought I had more time but I guess this aired already. Oops. I should be ok though. The odds of ep1 covering post-game character stories is really low.

It'll be a little odd, seeing an anime smack in the middle of a trilogy, but whatever. So long as we get good slice-of-life style character interactions and people throwing things that explode in various ways I'll be happy. Also, the art looks nice. Before playing I didn't care much for Escha's design but it really grew on me. She's that type of "subtle hot" that I really go for. I also had Logy pegged wrong too and he ended up being a pretty good character, even if his role is often the calm straight man in his life's eternal manzai act.

I'm looking forward to seeing if the anime changes any of this up.

Hehe, I'm really enjoying translating this one. Here's the untimed script.

Atelier Escha & Logy Episode 1

It’s time for bed, Escha.
I’m not sleepy!
If you oversleep again and miss your alchemy class,
Millia will scold you again.
Fine. Tell me a bedtime story, Clone.
I’ll go to bed right after that.
A bedtime story?
Yeah.
Tell me a fun and exciting story!
That is quite a difficult request.
I think I might have something you would like.
I made this picture book a long time ago.
You made it?
Yes.
I never thought I would be reading it to anyone.
I’m your first audience?
I can’t wait!
Hurry! Read it to me!
Very well, then.
I shall begin.
This is the Tale of the Hummingbird Princess.
{Opening Song}
Sign: Atelier Echa & Logy. Alchemists of the Dusk Sky
Title: Welcome to the Atelier!
Good morning, Escha.
It is time to awaken.
OK, OK.
Oh, my.
You mustn’t be late.
Your new job starts today.
I know.
I’ll work really hard!
Good morning, Escha!
Good morning, Miss Martha!
How are the vegetables today?
They’ve been getting worse and worse lately.
I see.
A blimp’s coming.
Doesn’t your new job start today, Escha?
Y-Yes, that’s right.
Take these.
I’d like to celebrate your success.
Sign: Research and Development Division. Corseid Branch
Good morning!
What are those flowers for?
Sign: Corseid Research and Development Chief. Marion
Sorry, Miss Marion.
She wanted to celebrate my new employment.
I don’t blame you.
Sign: Corseid General Manager. Corland
Let me take them for you.
Can you handle that, Sole?
Yes, sir.
Sign: Corseid Accounting and Provisions Manager. Sole
You’re such a nuisance, and you haven’t even started yet.
Now then, Miss Escha.
You’ve been very helpful to us recently,
but you are now our official alchemist.
I hope you’ll continue to work hard to better our town.
I will!
I’ll work my very hardest, sir!
Looks like you and Sole got off on the wrong foot.
I don’t think he’s ever been very fond of me.
I see your point.
He sees the R&D Department as a black hole for his budget.
But things are different now.
We’ve got two alchemists now!
I can only do basic synthesis, though.
Huh?
Did you just say “two alchemists”?
That’s right.
The blimp should be arriving soon.
I saw a blimp flying over town this morning.
That’s the one.
Excuse me.
It’s good to meet you.
I’m from Central City.
My name is Logix Ficsario.
Please call me Logy.
I’m Marion, the head of R&D.
And that’s-
U-Um, my name is Escha.
Sorry. I was careless.
Y-You brought a-a sword!?
That’s right.
I thought I’d need a weapon out here in the country.
I-I see your point.
You’ll be exploring the countryside from time to time.
Right, Escha?
Escha!?
What’s the matter, Escha?
I-I’m really sorry.
I didn’t mean to panic like that.
No, that was my fault.
Let me show you around your new atelier.
Thank you.
OK.
Wow!
A cauldron!
You bought a new one for us!
That’s right.
I thought you two might appreciate it.
That reminds me.
This is a cauldron?
Mr. Logy?
Sorry, ma’am.
I’m just surprised, that’s all.
I see.
This must be new to you.
No time like the present.
Why don’t you try synthesizing something?
I’ve never used a cauldron before.
I can’t synthesize with a cauldron.
Why not?
Cauldrons are so anachronistic.
I’ve never needed to use one before.
Really?!
Yes.
We use different methods back in Central.
We use forges like this.
I see.
I should have done more research.
I’ll talk with the boss about having a forge installed.
Um…
Might I ask a question?
Since we’re all here, may I synthesize something?
We’re still missing someone.
Is something the matter?
Oh, it’s nothing.
Go ahead, Escha.
OK!
It’ll be ready in half an hour.
Hooray!
It’s ready!
There we go.
I made an apple pie. {It’s too big to be called a “tart”}
An apple…pie?
You made an apple pie in a cauldron?
I’ve got some tea, if you’d like.
T-Thank you.
It’s good.
Oh, thank goodness!
I’ve asked the Chief to install a forge.
We should be able to have it ready by next week.
Thank you.
You’ll have to make do with it until then.
If we can’t prove our worth to the rest of the company,
we’ll all get fired.
This is our first request.
I’d like you to work together on it.
Of course.
Certainly.
Your first task is to repair the windmill in the apple orchard.
The windmill in the apple orchard?
That’s part of our job for R&D?
That’s right.
It’s absolutely crucial for Corseid.
But-
I don’t have time to listen to your complaints.
Get to work.
Yes, ma’am.
There’s something I don’t like about all this.
Really?
This doesn’t seem like work the R&D division should even be doing.
I know we’re out in the boonies, so there’s not much work to do, but still…
Um…
Just call be Escha, Mr. Logy.
You seemed surprised earlier, too.
Yes, but for a different reason.
I live near the apple orchard.
Hey! Escha-chan!
Hello, Mr. Ryuki!
Hop on by when you’re finished for the day!
I will!
Escha!
I haven’t seen him around before.
This is Mr. Logy. He’s here from Central.
What a handsome young man.
Now, now.
Don’t interrupt their work.
Everyone knows who you are.
Corseid is a very small village.
Yeah.
I did some research before I came here.
This whole area used to be a desert.
I know.
I read about it in my history books.
At least we have a village here now.
Yeah.
Lots of blimps pass through here.
I never thought things would change so much.
The Land of Dusk…
Is that what they call it back in Central?
Yeah.
A land where no crops will grow.
An arid desert.
The Land of Dusk has spread throughout most of the world.
We humans cannot live on most of the planet.
This era itself could spell the end of humanity.
We’re still here. We’re still surviving.
My mother lived here, and so did her mother.
We’ve always lived in this desert.
There’s a nice fragrance nearby.
There are two reasons why Corseid was built here.
This is one of them.
This is incredible.
I’ve done a lot of reading in Central.
I’ve never read or seen an apple orchard like this before.
It’s our special product.
This orchard used to be a desert, but now we can grow apples all year round.
It took us hundreds of years to cultivate the soil.
That’s why we have an orchard here today.
Hundreds of years…
Who told you that story?
Clone!
It’s good to see you again, Escha.
An automaton?
That’s right!
It’s good to see you too, Clone!
My, my.
You’re home awfully early, Escha.
Have you been fired already?
Of course not, Clone!
We’re here on business!
My, my.
That was unexpected.
Who is this young man?
I’m Logy.
This is a magnificent apple orchard, Miss Clone.
Thank you very much.
Did you grow these apples?
Please let me give you a brief tour.
You wanted to know if I grew these apples.
Yes.
Automatons live for several hundred years.
They’re mechanical dolls, so it makes sense.
My, my.
That’s not quite correct.
I tend to the orchard, but humans cultivate and water the fields.
I have lived and worked with Escha’s mother, her mother, and her mother before her.
We created this orchard together.
If you don’t maintain the orchard, it will all be for naught.
This windmill is very important to our village.
Please repair it for us.
What’s the problem?
An axle’s broken.
Can you fix it?
I’ll have to ask my cousin to take a look at it.
Your cousin?
His name’s Awin, and he’s a mechanic.
He’s my cousin, and he’s really good with machines.
I see.
We’ll need some more grease for the cogs.
I’ll go get the recipe.
Tell me what materials you need.
OK.
Is there something on my face?
Yes. There’s grease on your left cheek.
Thank you very much.
I feel kinda guilty.
You came all the way from Central, and you’re already helping me out at home.
It’s no trouble.
Apples are crucial to Corseid’s survival.
I understand why the R&D division needs to do it.
How’s it look?
It’s a unique cog, but if you get me the materials, Escha can repair it.
Sign: Corseid Mechanics Division. Awin
Really?
Yo!
I’m Heijima, his boss.
Why don’t you work for me?
No thank you.
I’m with the R&D division.
That’s right.
We’re a team!
OK, OK.
Work hard, you two!
We will!
This should do it.
Yes, this should be enough.
OK, then.
Let’s get started!
It should be ready in an hour.
Who taught you alchemy?
My mom.
Alchemy’s passed down through your family?
I think so.
My mom passed away when I was little,
so she only taught me the basics.
Clone taught me the rest.
She’s been around a long time.
She must be really knowledgeable.
She’s not very interested in doing alchemy herself.
She mostly just corrects my mistakes.
I see.
Why did you study alchemy, Logy?
There’s a university in Central.
Wow!
Central only allows the best alchemists to work there.
I want to uncover ancient technology and invent new machines.
Really?
I…
Never mind.
I want to use everything I’ve learned for practical purposes.
Alchemy’s completely different in Central.
It’s like they’re oil and water.
How’s it look?
It’s as good as new!
Hooray!
We did it!
We did it, didn’t we?
Y-Yeah.
We’re good to go!
OK!
It’s not working?
There’s no wind, that’s all.
But-
Don’t worry.
It’ll start moving when the wind starts up again.
Where’s the window?
Over there.
It’s working!
It’s spinning!
The cog’s working just fine.
Hooray! We did it!
What’d I tell you?
Yeah…
There’s another reason why Corseid was built here, Mr. Logy.
I see.
An unexplored ruin.
That’s right.
No one has set foot into those floating ruins.
Corseid blimp-port was built because of those ruins.
And yet, no one has been there.
That’s right.
Blimps can’t get approach it, or so I’ve heard.
We’ll probably need a new vehicle.
A new vehicle…
It’s always been my dream to go there,
ever since I was a child.
I hope we can go there someday.
Me too.

Ep 1 -

Wow. Holy shit this show is accurate. Items shown and backgrounds are spot on. The characters are very well portrayed and they really captured the feel. There's some slight differences in the anime art vs. the 3D models, but that existed in the game's 2D and 3D art too.

That intro is freakin gorgeous. The dreadnaught fight looked amazing and mixed very well with the scenes of day-to-day Colseit life. The wheel's on Katla's cart have upgraded to round, which a friend of mine pointed out. I'm glad. The ending is nice too, although it seems like a weird choice. I was expecting re-drawn pans of the picture book or something. It'll be fun to see people who don't know what that's all about speculate about it. Oh, and we get end cards too! I don't know if streaming sites do those since even some fansubbers leave them out. But I've always loved them. It's like "official" fanart. Especially when an artist I follow does one for a series I follow. Glee~~~

I'm also glad because an ex of mine who doesn't play or even look at games would absolutely adore the homunculi.

I'm kind sad that the midpoint eyecatch doesn't involve "BARREL!" but a character info card is fine too. A friend suggested having detailed alchemy recipes (something the games always skip) or documents. That's a cool idea (I loved the ones in Attack on Titan, for example) but I don't think character cards are really wrong. And there's enough of a cast to have a fresh one each ep without having to dip into faceless people.

So yeah, end result, I'm very glad this exists. I watched it with a smile on my face.

I'm liking it. It's pretty~. ESCHA'S SO CUUUUTE. Her tail moves? How does her tail move? Anime hyper Her clothes are so pretty and elegant....though they do not look comfortable. Guess it doesn't bother her though. Anime hyper

Ruins in the sky? That's plain cool. Definitely feels like an RPG game, this show.

@ HyugaHinata - good job! Actually, in some cases your translation made things a little clearer than the one on Crunchyroll.

Very relaxing episode. I like the world and the look of the show so far. I know nothing of the game, so I thought Logy might be a typical shoujo dick, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Good.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict that those two krazy kids are gonna reach those ruins - just see if they don't!

This is a nice breath of fresh air.
A relaxing story that keeps you interested.
Logy is nice to look at, so that's a plus as well.
With all the girls around, you'd expect this to be harem, but it's not.
Surprisingly, it's a regular fantasy anime ^^
It was fun to see dspoiler[ifferent races] in it too.
Escha is sweet as well.
Nothing big was happening, yet the simplicity of things kept me interested.
This reminds me of some Japanese RPG games for Wii that I used to play.
Think I'm gonna watch this anime.

There's a sweet little story behind it. It's only a small event in the game, so I guess most people won't consider it a spoiler, but to play it safe:

spoiler[Her mom made it for her with alchemy when she was little. Escha adores it and would make more if she could, but the recipe was lost. And even if she could make more, it would never really be like the one she has now. Escha doesn't remember her mom very well since she died when Escha was very young, so the tail is a cute little reminder of her.]

Episode 1

Going in I did not really expect much from picking up a general idea of setting, the story idea did look cute. But wow, this is probably the most charming first episode I have seen this season. When the opening song started I felt an energy I could really get into and it looks great. A series it reminds me of is Leviathan The Last Defence, but I think that this might be better than where that fell.

The designs are amazing, and perhaps I am wrong but I got the feeling that despite what the series picture shows it might actually be pretty fair to either genders. By which I think the characters are accessible to both fan genders. Logy looks a little Kirito like but seems a little more genuine and I think he does not come across as just an insert character. Escha seems a little clumsy but not in a fanservice way and looks pretty competent without having to rely on moe or how she relates to the guy. Perhaps I am exaggerating too much, but I think that they tread the line really well (at least in this episode) of being male and female focused.

And the RPG elements were also in there in a charming way that did not feel too intrusive, I could tell this was based off a game without knowing about the series, but it does not seem like something necessary to enjoy this. I laughed at the fact that it looks like they got into a spoiler[random encounter with some sort of purple wolf and magic rat], that felt like a nice touch. And the method of storytelling and exposition felt alright.

It is really too bad I don't have a PS3, I would probably like to check this out.

If it's like the game, you should be right. Despite all the super cute girls the games have always been pretty good about, well, not turning them into pandering moe blobs. They're just, you know, very cute. (And the games have their fair share of bishonen as well, so everyone wins.)

The thing about Escha & Logy is that despite all characters having some (obvious) quirks, they're still good coworkers and civil human beings in general. Logy may be too formal at times, but he's a nice guy. Escha may not look it, but she's good at what she does and has an admirable sense of adventure. The side characters are fun too and it shouldn't be to hard to work all their stories in a 13 episode anime (one common complaint about the game was actually that there should have been more events).

I'll second the "needed more events" thing and, since this is the middle of an arc I don't know what they'll do about a certain characters' events event which spans the entire trilogy of games.

Regarding the random encounter, I seriously respect that they didn't make a big show of the battle or Logy's attack. No screaming of names and flashy use, just a swing and that's that. I remember when the Tales of Eternia (Destiny2 in the west?) anime even got into elemental affinities and stuff for combat. The entire audience at the anime club when I saw it burst out laughing at that scene. I'd like it if AE&L kept the game-ness subtle like it's doing. It'd also be nice if the characters lost at least one battle just to show that's not the end of the world.

The atelier series consistently caters to all audiences (the game's various artists kind of determining the level of fanservice in the art, but it's usually balanced out. For every Pamela, there's a Sterk). and they keep a balance of pretty much every visual type. It's likely one of the most gender-accessible series with actual characters in it of anything I've played.

#2

spoiler[Introducing other new characters.
So far mostly girls..
I don't mind as much since this is a clean fantasy anime.
It's nice to watch something like that after a long time.
Their little adventures might not be glamorous, but they are interesting.
Somehow I get the feeling the emphasis is more on characters & alchemy.
Escha might not be the bravest girl, but I like her pure heart & curiosity.
Logy seems more cautious and kinda reserved.
Guess he'll relax a bit over time ^^
Nice episode!]

Ep2-
We meet 5 new characters (spoiler[Linca] YAY!), see the power of alchemy and learn that monsters aren't the only danger on expeditions. And the spoiler[equipment upgrading tool] which I didn't even use until way later in the game, when I made 2nd-to-top grade stuff. We also get a hint of Logy's past, which I'm sure if it were any other series he'd be all emo over. But Logy's an earnest and smart guy. He's not gonna let something like a "past" bog down the feel-good nature of the show.

There's something about having a relatively peaceful story in a dying world that's strangely beautiful.

Some of the expressions look a bit funky sometimes but all in all the show keeps looking good. Also, and I only noticed this now, does Escha say good morning after they'd already packed up their tent and gear? Kind of an odd time to say it. It's like if your roommate were giving you a drive to work and you spent an hour or so getting ready together and then as you were getting in the car you say Hi.

EDIT: Actually, analyzing this scene the thing is pretty messed up. spoiler[Logy gets dog-housed, Escha gets the tent to herself and doesn't even use the whole thing, and it seems like she slept in straight through the disassembly of the tent. LOL. He'd totally let her use the tent because he's gentlemanly enough but still... good morning!?]

Next ep it looks like we get our spoiler[first major battle] and we get to meet spoiler[the gorgeous and intelligent Threia]. You guys will like her. She's very amusing.
